The Hoosiers: 'The Trick To Life'
With a diverse line-up hailing from both Reading and Stockholm, The Hoosiers have quickly become the most hyped band of the moment. Lately, the trio have taken on the UK charts with their hook-filled anthems ‘Goodbye Mr A’ and ‘Worried About Ray’, the latter of which managed to stay in the UK Top Ten for over 8 consecutive weeks, which is no mean feat in this age of dispensable indie pop.
Combining the gloriously affecting cheer of The Flaming Lips with the lingering depth of The Cure, ‘The Trick to Life’ shows The Hoosiers are no one trick pony.
Unfortunately the band’s strength lies in the aforementioned winning formula of styles, so when they choose to branch out further it expectedly doesn’t always bring the same success. ‘Run Rabbit Run’ is surely the album's weakest track, with its angular experimentation coming off more like an ill advised tribute to Radiohead than a truly intriguing diversion. Nonetheless, this is a rare misstep, which is an impressive achievement in itself. Sure to be a huge seller and likely the be the foundation for a solid future in the live arena, ‘The Trick to Life’ is an admirable debut indeed.
