Wallis Bird: 'Spoons'
Irish-born, crazy-named Wallis Bird releases her debut album, having already been immersed in music pretty much since birth. Clearly, the girl has a gift for song-writing, with a beautifully simple folk tendency, coupled with a sort of kick ass, don’t-mess-with-me edge.
Comparisons to KT Tunstall, Amy MacDonald and the likes are not unfounded, and given then immense popularity of these it shouldn’t be too long before Bird becomes a Radio One favourite.
The misleading ‘Blossoms In The Street’ entices you in with simple guitar folk, before getting into the realms of a not-quite-as-good Janis Joplin. ‘Counting To Sleep’ inexplicably sounds like Avril Lavigne, but develops into a soulful folk tune that infects the ears. ‘Moodsets’ seems the most genuine; a dark, eerily good track with a much need injection of passion and contagious tune. Bird is a genuine talent, but with the exception of ‘Moodsets’, lacking a truly original edge to set her apart from other female singer-songwriters.
