Jaymay: 'Autumn Fallin’'
A pleasant slice of life-affirming folk music from a New York singer-songwriter with a wonderful young talent, 'Autumn Fallin’' tells the story of a young woman and her current love affair throughout a bitter New York winter.
The story is told well enough and the music is heart warming, whilst the lyrics are both touching and yet never too serious or self-conscious to prevent some funny moments - in some circumstances laugh-out-loud funny.
A mixture of warm introspection and delicate playing are supplemented by an almost boisterous vocal approach on some songs, in particular on 'You Are The Only One I Love' which is reminiscent of those great sixties communal singing efforts by the likes of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary and Lennon/Ono. If I have one complaint about the album, it's that some songs - in particular 'Sea Green, See Blue' - can drag on a bit, but nonetheless this is definitely recommended to fans of Beth Orton, Sheryl Crow (although it is a lot cooler than Ms Crow) et al. Overall this is a lovely record that is perfect to snuggle up with over the coming cold months.
