Reviews

  • Queen Sized

Or perhaps cruelly "What the fat chick from Hairspray did next." Whilst it seems slightly facetious to begin a review with such words, the word 'fat' and the bombardment of fried food and images of beauty coupled with the more "Greggs" slice of life is literally forced down the viewer's throat in the opening montage of this direct-to-video quickie.

  • Reservoir Dogs: Collector’s Edition

The third re-release in the UK of this classic film on DVD brings little new to the party, but the sheer enjoyable rush of watching Reservoir Dogs again for the first time in a few years confirms just how assured Tarantino's debut was when it burst onto screens in 1991.

  • Mercury Rev: ‘Butterfly’s Wing’

When on earth did it happen, that Progressive Rock music was castigated and denigrated as an undesirable thing? What a set back to creativity over the years since Punk dealt with some of the more contemptibly silly acts.

  • Spooks: Series 6

As soon as Series 5 was reaching its watery conclusion, the green light had already been shone on this next instalment of BBC One's popular spy drama.

  • Strait Jacket

The renaissance of Steam Punk (a variation on Cyber Punk as coined by William Gibson in his groundbreaking novel 'Neuromancer' and to date best represented by Akira and the Final Fantasy series) is not going to begin with Strait Jacket.

  • The Paddingtons: ‘No Mundane Options’

It is no surprise that The View and The Wombats have championed the cause of Hull’s The Paddingtons in recent months as, like the aforementioned bands, The Paddingtons make anodyne, throwaway pop-punk records that seem to be aimed at The Arctic Monkeys demographic.

  • Her Space Holiday: 'XOXO, Panda And The New Kid Revival'

The brainchild of laptop beats and bedroom knob twiddler Marc Bianchi, previous Her Space Holiday have been primarily electronica-based efforts.

  • Opera House: ‘Change In Nature’ EP

It’s been a long time since comparative psychology found its way into single releases. So here come Operahouse to remind us of Space’s ‘Female Of The Species’ and Bloodhound Gang’s ‘The Bad Touch’ whilst also helping us to forget them.

  • The View: ‘5Rebeccas’

This, the first single to be released from The View’s upcoming second album, suggests that they have not developed their sound significantly since the unveiling of 'Hats Of To The Buskers' in 2007.

  • Phil Daniels' Football Match Day Madness

There certainly couldn't be a more targeted Stocking Filler DVD this year than this collection of footballing "moments", all presented by everyone's favourite cockney geezer. Yet there won't be a bigger contender for January's most popular DVD on eBay as the rewatch value of this rushed released is precisely nil.
