American Son

An independent drama from director Neil Abramson, American Son is the story of Mike Holland (Nick Cannon), a nineteen year old private in the US Marine Corps on a four-day leave before he is sent to fight in Iraq.

As his 96 hours of leave dwindle, a sense of anxiety builds as Mike attempts to mentally prepare himself for the months of combat ahead as well as connect with his loved-ones and make the most of his final days of freedom.

Abramson’s movie was filmed within just twenty days and many of the scenes appear to have been shot with hand held-cameras. This limited filming time and distinct lack of special effects means that the success of the movie greatly hinges upon the script and the acting - both of which are impressive. Cannon’s portrayal of Mike as he interacts with his friends and family is engaging and moving. Most notably, the developing on-screen chemistry between Mike and Cristina (Melonie Diaz) is refreshingly believable.
