How did you enjoy working on this movie?
It was one of the most fun on set experiences I’ve ever had. This is a female driven comedy and Sandra Bullock is the force behind the movie. Sandra sets such a great tone on set. She is open and giving yet at the same time a leader. I was a huge fan of hers and I really wanted to work with her.
Tell me about your character Steve?
Steve is a camera operator for a local news team and Thomas Hayden Church plays the anchor (Hartman Hughes). He goes on a blind date that his parents set up with a friend of theirs daughter Mary Horowitz (Sandra Bullock) and it goes awry very fast, even before they make it out of her driveway – he gets the vibe that she is a little crazy so he pretends to get a phone call to go on assignment just to get out of there and to be polite he says he wishes she could come with him, and she takes it literally. She leaves her job and starts to follow him around the country thinking that he’s invited her and he thinks she is stalking him and thinks his life is in danger. But basically he judges her prematurely.
So this could have been a crazy stalker movie?
BRADLEY It could, but with Sandra you get a lot of lee way for her to be crazy because she is so naturally charming. She is this quirky character who is misinterpreted constantly. She is quirky, but you know she is not stalking him in the way Steve thinks she is so you see his misinterpretation of her actions.
Is this a romantic comedy or something quite different?
I think it’s a hybrid – it’s a quirky road comedy and also a romantic comedy….it's almost its own genre.
Is there a message?
I think it s real sweet simple message – you can march to the beat of your own drum and things can turn out OK. You don’t have to be someone who conforms to what others think.
Tell me about the “Steve” crossword?
Sandra’s character is a crossword constructor and after the date she does a crossword puzzle where all the answers are Steve, and she gets fired because of it.
Are you a crossword fan?
Yes I’m not very good but I have been doing the New York Times crosswords for years. On the set they were passing around photo copies of crosswords because there is a lot of waiting around so it helps pass the time.
Did you research being a camera man?
I shadowed a news crew here in Los Angeles and I learned a lot, it was fantastic. It was a pretty active time I followed them on stories to the courthouse. I got to talk to four or five cameraman or they actually prefer to be called photographers.
Describe working with British director Phil Traill?
I think he brought a different sense to it. There is this slapstick element to the comedy but I think Phil really brought his own voice. The film has so many transitions. It goes from wacky to being heartfelt in a blink of an eye and it takes a delicate touch which I think Phil really achieved.
You seem to be cast in a lot of comedies lately. Is that your preference?
I’m just happy to get hired. My reasons for getting into acting were not because of comedy. I loved comedy as a kid but my hero was Robert DeNiro.
What are some of the deleted scenes included on the DVD?
There is a scene where my character and Thomas Hayden Church razz Ken Jeong who plays our producer (Angus). We pretend we are going on a weird trip where he has to get naked and that was cut out so that was nice to see that one included.
Do you have any favorite comedies?
I love Trading Places, The In Laws, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and I never get tired of watching Some Like it Hot. That is such a classic comedy.
All About Steve is released on DVD on 17th May 2010.
