Malcolm McDowell's O Lucky Man! on DVD
Marking the 35th anniversary of the second instalment in Lindsay Anderson’s cult classic 'Mick Travis' trilogy of films, O Lucky Man! starring Malcolm McDowell will be released as a Two-Disc Special Edition on 19th May 2008 from Warner Home Video.
Joining McDowell is a host of British cinema heavyweights with Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren, (The Queen) Arthur Lowe (Dad’s Army), Ralph Richardson (Oh! What a Lovely War), James Bolam (The Likely Lads), Brian Glover (Kes) and Warren Clarke (Dalziel and Pascoe).
Rightly hailed as one of the all-time classic British cult films it is a sequel of sorts to If…., which made number 12 on the BFI’s top 100 British films list. And now, due to popular demand, the film finally makes it way to DVD. Like the other films in the ‘Travis Trilogy’ (the final part being 1982’s Britannia Hospital) the film is an allegorical comment upon life and politics; in this case dealing with Western imperialism, sex, and capitalism.
Malcolm McDowell provides the original idea for and stars as wide-eyed innocent (not for long) Mick Travis in Lindsay Anderson’s epic comedy. Armed with ambition and a work ethic, coffee salesman Mick hits the road and finds that desire alone can’t bring wealth and status. He meets rich and poor alike…and finds cunning and cruelty across the social spectrum. Other stars in multiple roles knit Mick’s picaresque adventures together. Commenting with wit and irony is Alan Price (former arranger and keyboardist with The Animals) providing a memorable BAFTA award-winning song score. Once you meet Mick, you’re the lucky one.
One man's dreams of success take him on a Byzantine journey through the various stations of the British class system in this politically charged black comedy. Mick Travis (Malcolm McDowell) is an ambitious young man who is looking to get his foot on the first rung of the ladder of success.
Travis' desire for success quickly sets him on a curious odyssey in which he happens upon a secret sex club for businessmen, finds himself the subject of random seductions by lonely women, is captured and tortured by military intelligence agents, submits to medical experiments at a bizarre private clinic, hitches a ride with a travelling rock band, falls in love with a beautiful young bohemian and eventually lands in prison after he's implicated in a deal to sell chemical weapons to the Third World.
