Inland Empire
As a prostitute starts to disrobe in a hotel room, the rabbits on the
television begin ironing. And that's just the beginning... Inland Empire is like nothing you will ever see or experience. This is David Lynch's most troubling outing yet (and that's saying an awful lot!) - it's also his longest, weighing in at a minute shy of three hours.
The film itself is part endurance test, part nightmare; frustrating and engrossing in equal measures.
Whilst it shares many similarities with Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway, it's more personal and damn-right moving than anything Lynch has produced since 1980's The Elephant Man. Laura Dern is superb, playing a fragile actress who is taken on a hallucinogenic trip to the furthest reaches of her sanity by (of all things) her neighbour dropping by to introduce herself. The rest is up to you to decipher. Dense and disturbing, this is not an entertaining night out (and if Mulholland Drive did nothing for you, this will do even less), but it will keep you talking for hours afterwards.
