The X Files - Weird world timeline

1908 - A mystery explosion flattens nearly 1000 square miles of forest in the Tunguska region of Siberia. Scientists suspect a meteor or comet, but others speculate about UFOs or anti-matter.
1909 - Citizens of New Jersey and Pennsylania report sightings of a terrifying bird-like creature dubbed the Jersey Devil.
1914 - British soldiers in the World War One Battle of Mons, in Belgium, report seeing angels and believe this turned the tide of the battle in their favour.
1918 - The USS Cyclops disappears in the Bermuda Triangle with the loss of all 306 crew.
1945 - Five US Navy aircraft disappear off the Florida Coast in the Bermuda Triangle. No bodies or wreckage was ever recovered.
1947 - A pilot spots nine strange objects in formation over the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, USA. The term "flying saucers" is coined.
1947 - The US government sets up Project Sign, to investigate UFOs. It later changes its name to Project Grudge, then Project Blue Book.
1947 - Some thing crashed near Roswell, New Mexico, in the USA. The authorities say they have recovered a "flying disc" but then say it was a weather balloon.
1955 - A family in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, report their house besieged by glowing goblin-like creatures. The family opened fire with rifles and reported several hits, though the creatures were unharmed.
1957 - Antonio Villas Boas reports being taken onto a spacecraft in Brazil and making love to a beautiful alien woman.
1961 - The first classic alien abduction story is reported, as Betty and Barney Hill of New Hampshire report being taken onto a UFO and being experimented on by aliens.
1963 - President Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas.
1964 - The Warren Commission concludes that JFK was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald, who was the lone gunman.
1969 - Apollo 11 lands on the moon, though conspiracy theorists dispute this.
1969 - The US government shuts down their UFO investigation programme, codenamed Project Blue Book.
1972 - The US government sets up its first study to see if psychic powers can help locate things of interest to the authorities. There were several projects, the best known of which was Project Stargate.
1990 - The Belgian Air Force detects a UFO on radar and scramble two F-16 jets. The pilots achieve a lock-on with their airborne radar, but the UFO eludes them.
1994 - The United States Air Force publishes a report stating that the Roswell incident was sparked by the crash of a highly classified high-altitude balloon.
2001 - Terrorists launch the 9/11 attacks and America launches the 'War on Terror'. Conspiracy theorists immediately suspect the US government was involved.
2004 - The 9/11 Commission concludes that 9/11 was the work of Osama Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda organization.
2006 - A UFO is seen by several pilots and airport workers hovering over Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
