Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden?
Morgan Spurlock's latest venture is a trite affair: on discovering that his increasingly annoying girlfriend (you'll remember her if you ever saw 2004's Super Size Me) is pregnant, he attempts to put the world to rights by finding Osama Bin Laden.
The structure is familiar: Spurlock begins his quest in New York researching the most notorious man in the world and reaching very few conclusions. We then meet the same independent physician who made him terminate the all McDonald’s diet as he has his shots in anticipation of going to all of these “dangerous countries”. This yokel-like mentality is compounded when he trucks a "dumb Yank abroad" motif to his trips through Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Pakistan and ultimately Afghanistan before concluding that - hey, these misunderstood Muslims are very similar to you and me, they just don’t live in America.
Spurlock's work showed promise with Super Size Me, but evidently his initial idea is always more interesting than the execution and, just as the food frenzy of Super Size Me became an endurance test for both himself and viewer, so Where In The World... degenerates into a farcical race against the clock as Spurlock's "mission" is placed in jeopardy with the imminent birth of his first child (“Operation Special Delivery”). Which route should he follow: the honourable father or the avenging American?
Writing this review on September 11th throws the whole misguided venture into a very dim light, as such revolutionary world events should be given over into the hands of more reasonable journalists than the likes of Michael Moore or this attention seeking self-publicist.
