High School Musical 3 tops UK box office

High School Musical 3: Senior Year graduated with honours and finished top of the class this weekend at number one at the UK box office with an £8.4m haul over its first weekend (including 2 days of previews).

High School Musical3 now holds the record for the biggest opening for a musical in UK history, beating the previous record holder Mamma Mia! which opened on £6.5m.

Audiences packed the aisles for the first major cinema event in the phenomenal High School Musical franchise this weekend, but with most of the country only beginning the half term school holiday today, the best is still to come with many shows throughout the week already sold out. The film is currently playing on 494 screens and the opening weekend screen average was a staggering £12,000.

The worldwide opening totals $82m with the US taking $42m across a three-day debut, to keep Saw V from the #1 spot. Internationally the film broke records with $40m from 22 countries, setting a new opening weekend record for an international launch in October. The film opened at #1 in all international territories led by the UK, which was the single biggest oversees territory for the release. 35% of international territories are still to open the film.
