Freeland: 'Cope™'
Freeland is Adam Freeland’s moniker and 'Cope™' is his first album in six years, released on his own label. Here you can find collaborations with some pretty awesome artists and producers, including the likes of Joey Santiago (Pixies), Twiggy Ramirez (NIN), Jerry Casale (Devo) and Tommy Lee.
With a rather electro beat-based core sound, the album also has flashes of industrial brilliance and darkness. Opener ‘Do You!’ is a good example of the latter, kicking off with mesmerising and grinding laptop noise, followed by heavy drums and interrupted vocals. The song has the same tempo throughout, but it will keep you going. ‘Under Control’ is a similar affair, only more ominous and the vocals have an LCD Soundsystem feel. Freeland also makes use of robotic voices, which are a bit unnecessary.
‘Mancry’ has an abrasive yet atmospheric start. It's purely instrumental, but it’s a prime example of good low key and relaxing acid house. Conversely, 'Borderline’ starts off with yearning vocals that lead the song until the music culminates into electro explosions. A particularly modern track is ‘Best Fish Tacos In Encinada’, which sounds like the type of track you'd expect to hear at an East London club on a Friday night - 'nuff said.
All in all, 'Cope™' rubs pretty much every point of the electronic music sphere, so if you’re a fan of all things digital, this will go down your ally very nicely.
