Shine A Light
The Stones keep on rollin' on with no signs of their light diminishing, evidenced by this thrilling live concert performed for New York City's privileged great and good in 2006.
There is also some entertaining pre-amble with the film's legendary director Martin Scorsese flustered and in thrall to Mick Jagger's pre-concert control freakery, as well as archive interview clips between songs.
Performing classics and rarities with celeb chums helping out in style, (a supremely chuffed Jack White on 'Loving Cup' is a highlight) the movie stands as a document to their longevity, vitality and astonishing professionalism. The constant pestering of 'How long will you do this for?' in the interspersed clips is shown up for the pointless question it is; when you are this good at something and enjoy it as much as they clearly do, then why on earth would you stop? When the lights come up at the end of the show, you don't notice the wrinkles on the band members' faces, but the sheer delight and humility at still being able to do what they love.
A performance this accomplished, yet somehow still raw and relevant, almost feels beyond criticism, but there are a few niggles. Their eagerness to please in lining up to meet President Clinton and his seemingly gigantic family is a bit embarrassing, and the omission of the 'Who killed the Kennedys?' line from 'Sympathy For The Devil' a further concession to 'the man'. When a show is this good, however, it's difficult to care.
