Edith Bowman (Radio 1's Big Weekend) Interview

It's time for Radio 1's Big Weekend again and this year the free annual flagship event comes from Lydiard Park, Swindon. Taking place on 9 and 10 May, The Prodigy, Lily Allen, Snow Patrol and Kasabian head the stellar line-up, joined by more than 50 UK and international artists including Calvin Harris, Gossip, Scouting For Girls, Franz Ferdinand and N-Dubz. In front of 40,000 music fans across the weekend there are four arenas in the park – the Main Stage; the In New Music We Trust Stage; the Outdoor Stage; and the BBC Introducing Stage.

Edith Bowman, a Big Weekend expert and presenter of BBC Three's coverage (along with Reggie Yates), reveals her insider tips and favourite memories...

What is your favourite Big Weekend memory?

"Well there is probably one from every year to be honest but I think personally Dundee (2006) was amazing. The crowd were the best I've ever seen and so appreciative we'd gone there. There was an amazing line-up of bands and almost home for me so I was proud as punch."

Who are you really looking forward to seeing this year?

"I'm really looking forward to Doves, I love that band so much. I think the In New Music We Trust Stage gets bigger and better every year, also bands like Friendly Fires, Ladyhawke and Florence And The Machine I can't wait for. I also think Snow Patrol headlining will blow people's socks off. Definitely one for a good old sing along."

What makes the Big Weekend so special?

"The fact that it's a free concert makes is super special and also having watched it grow year on year, it's wonderful to see it now be the official start of the festival season."

As a Big Weekend expert, what is your top survival tip for those lucky enough to get a ticket?

"Survival tip would be to pace yourself and also seek out some new music. Huw Stephens has already given me his tips of bands to check out on the BBC Introducing Stage, so I'm off to see Elephant and Bombay Bicycle Club for starters."

Tell us about the BBC Three TV coverage – what can viewers expect to see?

"I'm very excited about working with Reggie Yates this year and we intend to give viewers all the best bits from the weekend, while letting them see some backstage stuff, too. Viewers can see us on BBC Three on Saturday live from 7pm and Sunday live from 10.45pm, plus there are highlights on Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm till 8pm."
