Battant’s Mixtape

Battant’s debut album ‘No Head’ on the 25th May 2009. To celebrate, the band have picked out their favourite songs for us!

Described by the French press as "primitive techno", "pure music, razor-sharped and urgent", a kind of "dark, skeletal post punk", the album wastes no time. All songs search towards the electronic fever of Suicide, the minimal pop of Young Marble Giants and the intensity of Jacques Brel.

Song For Getting Ready To Go Out
Weltklang: 'Veb Heimat'

Joel: "When I hear it I want to go out. I don’t really like going out that much, but songs like this remind you why going to a club can be fun."

Song To Go To Sleep To
Bjork: 'Unravel'

Joel: "The 'Homogenic' album is really good for sleeping to."

Song To Help Get Through Winter
Brian Eno ‘There Is Nobody’
Tim: "Pretty much the whole of 'Music For Films' has an icy chill about it - why listen to 'warming' music in cold times? I'd rather revel in the arctic waste."

Song For A Summer Day
Au Revoir Simone: 'All Or Nothing'
Joel: "It sounds like summer. It’s good picnic music."

Song To Wake Up To
Kraftwerk: 'Tanzmusik'
Tim: "Off the 'Ralf And Florian' album when they sounded like a strange folk group. For those Teutonic Spring mornings."

Song To Nurse A Hangover
Avida: 'Devo Andare'
Tim: "Italian electro from 1982. A rhythm which suggests a silly dance, and Italian lyrics - I have no idea what they mean. Somehow gives you the energy to go out for another night on the smash."

Song To Sing In The Shower
Elastica: 'Waking Up'
Joel: "Any Elastica song is a good shower song."

Song To Wake You From A Coma
The Five Jones Boys: ‘Mr Ghost Goes to Town’
Chloe: "The opening bar is what would wake me and the rest would insure I come-to smiling, ready to slip back into my good old self."

Song To Quit Your Job To
Shellac: ‘Prayer to God’
Chloe: "So long as I could play it really fucking loud while I stomped out of the building laughing."

Song To Have Played At Your Funeral
Peggy Lee: ‘Johnny Guitar’
Chloe: "It sure is poignant…"

Song To Fall In Love To
Adolphson & Falk ‘Blinker Bla’
Chloe: "I don’t know what they’re sayingm cause I don’t speak German, but I fall in love every time I listen to it."

Song To Sulk To After Being Dumped
Abner Jay: ‘I’m So Depressed’
Chloe: "Says it in the title, and it would snap me out of it pretty damn quick."

Song To Get You On The Dancefloor
Aaron Carl: 'Down'
Tim: "One of my proper all time favorites. Stark drums, the simplest of bass lines and some ridiculous homoerotic lyrics: ""even though we can't have babies we can still have fun"."

Song For A Road Trip
Violent Femmes: 'Blister In The Sun'

Joel: "It was played a lot in the tour van and the weather was really nice. Chloe had a dance for it, which made me laugh."
