The Blizzards' Mixtape

The Blizzards will release their debut single, ‘Buy It Sell It’, through Island Records on 6th July 2009. To celebrate, the band's frontman Niall Breslin has picked our his favourite songs for us!

The Blizzards grew up surrounded by records that documented the soul of the Sixties and the neon-pop of the Eighties, and were also largely influenced by The Specials throughout the late Seventies. Their guitar-pop dips into all of these musical milestones and more - introducing this band as one of the most exciting acts of the moment. Like Weezer on steroids, The Blizzards are brilliantly conceived.

Song To Sing In The Shower
Phil Collins: ‘Easy Lover’
"No good reason. It’s just a TUNE and I reckon Phil Collins wrote it in the shower anyway."

Song For Getting Ready To Go Out
Diana Ross: ‘I’m Coming Out’
"The guitar/drum sequence at the intro of this tune gives me goosebumps every time it graces my speakers. Anyone who is not smiling after 4 mins 22 secs of this song should stay at home and watch Crimewatch. This tune and a half pack of ProPlus works every time for me."

Song To Go To Sleep To
Ben Harper: ‘Waiting On An Angel’
"This song is beautiful. His voice and ability to write top-class melodies would send a pill head to sleep."

Song To Nurse A Hangover
Diana Ross: ‘I’m Coming Out’
"I usually throw this on again!"

Song To Wake You From A Coma
Sepultura: ‘Chaos A.D.’
"I was a huge metal fan when I was a teenager and this was one of the first real defining metal songs of my generation. I used to cover it in my old band. It was an awful version as we were pretty crap on our instruments at the time and Sepultura were animals on their instruments."

Song To Sulk To After Being Dumped
Paula Cole: ‘I Don’t Want To Wait' (theme from Dawson’s Creek)

"I fucking hated Dawson’s Creek. All that self-righteous bullshit . All the girls in my town started talking with that weird American-y ‘accentuate the last syllable’ accent after watching this shit. That theme song was their national anthem, but it wrecked my head."

Song To Get You On The Dancefloor
Belinda Carlisle: ‘(We Want) The Same Thing’
"I’m a shit dancer. I’m uncoordinated, dangerous and can’t keep a beat after a few pints. However, this tune has some kinda magnetic force that draws me to the floor every time. I love the ‘80s tunes and the production and, to be honest, any Belinda tune gets me on the floor. I once asked Mark Ronson to play this at a party and he declined… and people say he is cool!"

Song To Clear The Dancefloor
"Any Belinda Carlisle track, because it usually means I’m on the floor and for some reason people tend to keep away from me while I’m dancing!"

Song For A Road Trip
Handel: ‘Hallelujah Chorus’
"It’s just epic."
