Team Waterpolo's Mixtape

Preston’s electro pop magicians Team Waterpolo return with a new single on 24th August 2009 in the shape of ‘Letting Go’. To celebrate, the band have picked out their favourite songs for us!

The track is a taster for the band’s debut album, recorded in France at Black Box Studios, and is radically reinvented from the version familiar to the die-hard fanbase. The summer has already seen the lads spend a weekend in June at Glastonbury Festival (playing no less than three separate sets) and they are set to play Rock In The Park on 15th August.

Song For Getting Ready To Go Out
The Chordettes: ‘Mr. Sandman’

Fred: “It’s perfect when you’re ready to meet that special someone that will make all your dreams come true. Or, if it's going to be a big night and you need some courage, then neck a vodka and listen to the theme music from Requiem For A Dream.”

Song To Go To Sleep To
Disney Studio Chorus: ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’
Fred: “I may start crying just trying to describe the beauty of this song. It's pure perfection.”

Song To Help Get Through Winter
Vanilla Ice: ‘Ice Ice Baby’

Lex: “To remind me that it’s cold outside, but there are fun times to be had.”

Song For A Summer Day
Chad & Jeremy: ‘A Summer Song’
Nathan: “An obvious choice really – the title says it all. It sounds like summer as well. Beautiful melodies and harmonies, sung in a charmingly sloppy way.”

Song To Wake Up To
Elbow: ‘One Day Like This’
Lex: “My alarm clock used to play ‘One Day Like This’ and it was always a good way to wake up. It’s got quite a mellow introduction so it’s a nice gradual wake-up call. If I needed to get up in a hurry I'd have ‘Dig’ by Mudvayne.”

Song To Die To
Andrea Bocelli & Sarah Brightman: ‘Time To Say Goodbye’
Ruggi: “Because it's one of my favourite songs and people would cry, which they should do because I'd be dead. Sad times, let's not think about this any longer.”

Song To Nurse A Hangover
Golden Silvers: ‘Venus’
Fred: “This is just a wonderful song. Even if you are feeling down in the dumps it will pick you up and slap you round the face!”

Song To Sing In The Shower
Modest Mouse: ‘Float On’
Ruggi: “Although it's probably better to sing it in the bath so you can sing it to all your floating toys!”

Song To Wake You From A Coma
Harpers Bizarre: ‘Witch-Tai-To’
Nathan: “I think this is based on some old Native American Indian chant, and it's absolutely glorious. It's about being glad you're not dead, which you aren't if you're in a coma. So snap out of it!”

Song To Quit Your Job To
Sparks: ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us’
Nathan: “Just because it's mental and reminds me of a shootout in the Wild West. A shoot-out between you and your boss.”

Song To Have Played At Your Funeral
John Williams: ‘The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme)’
Lex: “It'd be great to have my coffin (obviously with red neons) somberly marched to the front of the room with this theme playing.”

Song To Fall In Love To
Martha Reeves & The Vandellas: ‘Heat Wave’
Ruggi: “Why? Because motown rocks and, instead of creating a slow, sloppy love, it makes for great, upbeat, fast love! Summer love; love that lasts. Real, live, true love!”

Song To Sulk To After Being Dumped
10cc: ‘I’m Not In Love’
Nathan: “Yeah, that's right! Perfect to sulk to with all the atmospheric synths and dark chord progressions. Plus it's all about someone being told that they're not loved by a person who they thought loved them, etc. Great.”

Song To Get You On The Dancefloor
Q-Tip: ‘Let’s Ride’
Nathan: “This is a J Dilla produced hip-hop masterpiece. Phat beat, great little guitar sample (from Joe Pass’ ‘Giant Steps’) and some very cleverly placed effects. Never fails to get me dancing.”

Song To Clear The Dancefloor
The Tweets: ‘The Birdie Song’

Song For A Road Trip
Seasick Steve: ‘Thunderbird’
Fred: “If I was a hobo, which I sort of am, I would play this song everywhere I went. I mean, it's that good.”
