Biffy Clyro: ‘Many Of Horror’
Biffy Clyro, it’s fair to say, have successfully, and quietly, ridden on that whole ‘New-Wave’ bandwagon of post-modern emo/rock/punk.
In doing so, they've amassed a cult-following, which has since steadily grown. This forthcoming single is taken from their critically acclaimed album ‘Only Revolutions’, though it’s difficult to find any such ‘revolution’, judging from this single.
From the offset, ‘Many Of Horror’, as familiar sounding as they come, doesn’t really go anywhere - nor, sadly, does it attempt to. A stab at ‘edgy/dark romance’, it tries to connect with you emotionally but, unfortunately, fails. It’s just too adolescent and generic in its sound, lacking ambition, and carries with it that ‘we’ve-heard-it-all-before’ vibe. Slightly American-sounding also, a trend of this band (dare one say a reason for their success?), it’s a sad note considering they stem from rural Scotland.
In saying that, the song isn’t all that bad, as it does have a nice, if not simple, rhythm to its beat. ‘Gentle, dark rock’ would be a good way of terming it, and as it progresses there is a sense of soaring urgency which develops, with a powerful orchestral accompaniment towards the end (from multiple Grammy-Award-winning composer David Campbell). But you just feel it’s all ultimately forgettable.
