Patrick Wolf: 'Damaris'
By rights Patrick Wolf should be considered one of the vastly talented eccentrics that British pop music produces with each passing generation and, despite being only a few albums into his career, deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Kate Bush and Antony Hegarty.
That Wolf has not achieved greater success seems only to have spurred him on to produce ever more ornate and baroque chamber-pop pieces, of which 'Damaris' is a perfect example. The third single to be taken from his 'The Bachelor' album, the song tells the story of a forbidden love affair and encapsulates everything that is great about Wolf’s songwriting, principally the vaulting ambition and the exuberant, windswept romanticism.
The true measure of 'Damaris' is that it remains totally bewitching despite at times sounding like both Celine Dion’s 'My Heart Will Go On' and Sting’s 'Fields Of Gold'.
