Hexicon: 'Something Strange Beneath The Stars'

Hexicon is songwriting duo Michael Collins and Paul Rains - who also moonlight as Allo Darlin - plus multi-instrumentalist Thomas Allard.

'Something Beneath The Stars' is the first single to be taken from their debut album 'The Blossom Sighs'. Hexicon are unable to live up to their rather extravagant billing as a modern day Beach Boys, but with SSBTS they have produced a gently lilting acoustic strum, supported by a French horn melody, a slightly distorted guitar riff reminiscent of The Lightning Seeds and a beautifully melancholic falsetto vocal.

The B-side, more of a rolling alt-country number featuring a riff straight of the last Whiskeytown record, suggests that the duo have real songwriting pedigree. Hexicon are certainly not successors to The Beach Boys, but perhaps they could amount to a more bucolically English Elliot Smith.
