The Boy Who Trapped The Sun: 'Home' EP
Colin MacLeod is part of the extremely soft voiced wave of whispering Scottish indie that has accrued a strong pedigree.
The aching feyness that this suggests is happily absent on this enjoyable five song EP. Although there is quiet and a haunting echoing structure here, the record is not excessively earnest or melancholy.
The title track, which opens, showcases guitar virtuosity and a jerking background beat that demands movement. 'The Fox' appears in a rush of warmth, spreading out with richness reminiscent of Fleet Foxes, into a guitar and piano ballad that has a huge scope. “Happiness exists when it’s shared” sings Macleod, in a warning that is then echoed by the turn the music takes.
'Lying To Get On Your Good Side' is out and out witty, with a jocular, sinister quality reminiscent of The Who’s 'Boris The Spider'. It breaks up the sparkling, reflective indie that ends the EP, 'Change The Clocks', which is a more fragile, breathy piece of work. It may be wistful and keening, but it works nicely.
