Ronika: 'Do Or Die' / 'Paper Scissors Stone'
Releasing her debut EP on her own label, one would assume Ronika would be setting a benchmark for her genre, specifically electro-disco, and delightfully she proves us right.
'Do Or Die' immediately brings to mind Irish quirk-pop sensation Roisin Murphy, but the similarity does not mar the enjoyment of this irresistible track. Funk oozes from each squelchy bass note as Ronika’s silky voice woos us to the dancefloor. Ticking both French house and classic disco boxes, 'Do Or Die' is sexy, quirky and thoroughly addictive.
The French house influences are even more evident in the Daft Punk-esque 'Paper, Scissors Stone'. Although not as strong as 'Do Or Die', it is still as fresh and funky, with the husky tones of Charles Worthington complimenting Ronika’s well. The unsettling throbbing dub of the Ben Fawce take on the latter track is also impressive.
Delivering a deliciously nostalgic sound, Ronika still has a distinct eye on current pop trends.
