The Maccabees: ‘No Kind Words’

The South London five continue to intrigue with the first taster of their as-of-yet-untitled second album, due out in May.

Produced by Marcus Dravs (Björk, Arcade Fire), ‘No Kind Words’ is a slice of atmospheric, guitar-driven alt-pop with the sole intention of burrowing into your mind. Well, mission accomplished.

From the opening drum blitz to singer Orlando Weeks’ sombre tone and the Bowie-style backing vocals, the song digs and digs until its chorus is deftly implanted. Old-school but fresh, reproachful but seductive, downbeat but energetic, ‘No Kind Words’ is a treat.
