Lisa Hannigan: ‘I Don’t Know’
After seven years of collaborating with Damien Rice, the Irish songbird decides to go it alone, with her own label. If her first single from album ‘Sea Sew’ is any indication, it appears Ms Hannigan’s independence will pay dividends.
With her breathy voice cradling lyrics not dissimilar to Alanis Morissette’s introspective-list-with-flashes-of-irony technique, Hannigan has crafted a cute folk tune made of acoustic guitars, barely perceptible percussion and horns from some nameless ‘70s theme tune.
The violins, however, add some good old bitter to the sweet. Is it possible that this lover Hannigan’s trying to fathom is only a product of her imagination? Whatever the answer, one thing remains clear: Damien Rice will be wishing he’d never let her go.
