Chromeo (Brighton)

Canadian Electrofunk came, saw and conquered a particularly welcoming Brighton crowd on this pleasantly mild autumnal night. Not only was the venue (Digital and its monstrous new sound system) aptly suited to such revolutionary activity, but the Brighton crowd welcomed the Jewish and Palestinian pair without the need to separate the city into opposing warring factions.

Opening with hit 'Destination Overdrive', the crowd bounced to the deafening beats of P-Thugg and Dave 1. The mix of synthesizers and keyboards matched the impressive live guitar and bass licks of the ever dynamic Dave 1, where as P-Thugg’s use of the talk box (an art in which he explains “take years to master”) was similarly contrary to throwing a ball up to Pele and demanding him to juggle. As the duo paced rapidly through the hits, 'Needy Girl' and 'Tenderoni', they found it difficult to leave the stage but returned for an encore of Journey’s 'Don’t Stop Believing' with a dirty electro twist. As if not feeling justified enough, the duo - post- set - promptly made their way up into Digital’s electro room and manned the decks for a further two hours. A messy night had by all.

Digital, Brighton, 25th October 2007.
