Marc Bolan: 'The Final Word'
This warts and all depiction of the late rocker is an excellent tribute to one of Britain's brightest stars who died tragically young (at 29). Born Mark Feld in 1947 the documentary features family members and friends from every aspect of Marc's early life (voiced in a typically animated style by Suzi Quatro).
A rebel at school, Bolan was expelled at 14 and never returned to Secondary Education; instead he eked out a living as a market trader and part time model, inevitably gravitating towards music in his late teens. When his first band, John's Children, fell apart after a legendary gig cum festival at Alexandra Palace, T-Rex was born and the last throes of Glam Rock finally had a poster boy to rival Bowie. The decline of his talents was as immediate as his meteoric success, and Bolan died in a car crash two weeks shy of his 30th birthday.
The DVD features an excellent collection of bonus material and although very recently shown on the BBC during a celebration of his life, this is a must buy for anyone with even a fleeting interest in the theatricality of rock music.
Extras: Deleted scenes, extended interviews, In The Studio, and promotional films.
Released on 12th November 2007 by Universal Pictures UK.
