Stealing Green: 'Stealing Green 1' EP

Stealing Green, an unsigned five piece from Hammersmith, profess to a shared love of rock music’s scragglier heritage; Aerosmith, AC/DC and Free are all sonically name checked in an EP that is entirely unabashed about its distance from the ‘cool’ centre that guitar music has recently gravitated toward. The result is a showcase of guitar talents informed by a generation preceding the usual suspects.

Most of this music’s appeal is in its aural novelty. When was the last time you heard a slow head nodding power chord rock out like 'No Surrender', or a gleefully excessive but deft guitar solo like the one on 'Human Blues'. More to the point, when was the last time we heard this particular brand of hoarse rock singing, that sounds more suited to shouting “TIMBER” than to ordering an amaretto and coke.

Some of this is a little thin on the ground, but the re-appropriation of the drop-d rock riffing on 'Human Blue' is spot on and the terseness of 'Give It All Back' is funky and energetic. A rousing new look for modern guitar bands.
