Yoav: 'Club Thing'
People say Yoav is ‘the bright new hope for the New Year’. So, how does this claim hold up now that we’re in April?
‘Club Thing’ sounds like an English Justin Timberlake as produced by Timbaland (Yoav’s actually from Romania via South Africa and New York). His baby-bum-smooth falsetto glides over plucked loops of acoustic guitar and tabla-esque percussive noises. Sample lyric: ‘And when the animal hunger runs deep I know I’m never going to get to sleep.’ Alright, he sounds more like a mouse than a gin ‘n’ juice fuelled wild dog, but it’s all quite toe-tappin’.
‘Club Thing’ has been going down well on dance floors in the US, and the story goes that Tori Amos has let him tickle her ivories. But what’s more interesting is that he makes the whole lot on one guitar and a bunch of effects. I wonder if he can sustain a whole album of this stuff?
Released on 28th April 2008 by Island.
