Tom Baxter: 'Tell Her Today'

‘Serious’ acoustic singer-songwriters blending in a smidge of piano and strings are ten a penny at the moment. In this climate, unfortunately, Tom Baxter becomes just another normal-sounding name with normal-sounding songs.

How many times can we hear the same mournful vocals lamenting a lost love, as a polished multi-instrumental arrangement builds up to something a lot more dramatic than the actual original songwriting? With the vain hope of disguising the inherent mediocrity of so many of these songs, Tom Baxter remains highly conventional, conservative and unconstructive. Obviously there are plenty more contenders to come, so fleeting gestures like this can be forgotten when newcomers decide to dabble in classical musicianship.
