Tokyo Police Club: 'Tesselate'

Tokyo Police Club have been saddled with this ‘hotly-tipped’ tag for a while now, and, frankly, it does them no favours, as latest single 'Tesselate' proves.

Though they have a very ‘now’ sound, with a modern variation on The Strokes’ no-wave sound mixed with Cold War Kids' vocals, the trouble is that they don’t have a good song amongst all the fashionable indie-disco-rock beat-making. Taken from their debut album 'Elephant Shell', 'Tesselate' sounds moderately affecting whilst you listen to it, though press the ‘stop’ button and there’s absolutely nothing left that stays with you. This sort of thing may work live (as gigs are all about immediacy and a catchy beat), but, on record, a song’s flaws are exposed for all to see, and exposed they are on this derivative slice of angular-haired nonsense.

Released on 21st April 2008 by Memphis Industries.
