Various Artists: 'Disco Not Disco'
Those not familiar with post-punk, electro and leftfield, like myself, may need a few listens to get your head around such an eclectic amalgam of chilled out tunes, funky beats and sexy bass lines, but it’ll conquer you in the end.
'Disco Not Disco: Post Punk, Electro And Leftfield Disco Classics 1974-1986' is a collection of the kind of rare and random tracks you might hear at an achingly cool nightclub while you stand awkwardly by the bar pretending you know the words. Though they are over twenty years old, the tracks still sound fresh in 2008, helping to highlight the banality of much of today’s music scene.
The third compilation in this series begins with the attitude filled 'Launderette' by Vivien Goldman, which though inspiring in itself is quickly usurped by the fantastically punk disco sound of Delta 5’s 'Mind Your Own Business'. Other highlights include the samba-esque horns and percussion of 'Your Life' by the rarely showcased Konk and the funky disco bass of August Darnell’s remix of James White & The Black’s 'Contort Yourself'.
This record is a perfect way to introduce yourself to the post-punk genre or to remind you of just how great it is if you’re already a fan.
Released on 4th February 2008 by Republic Of Music.
