Red Light Company: ‘Meccano’
Not quite as good as Lego, but still a symbol to many of more innocent times, ‘Meccano’ is the second single from London based-indie boys Red Light Company.
Formed through an internet advert only last year, the band have made quick work of creating a sound that suits them and writing songs with genuine appeal - not surprising considering the dedication they have shown to make their dream a reality, with bassist Shawn Day jumping over the Atlantic to set up base camp in London and other members all upping sticks from all over the UK to join him at the capital.
Frontman Richard Frenneaux has written on a theme that we can all relate to, the loss of childhood dreams and friendships and the track is driven by on by his emotive voice and gushing guitar riff. Judging by this track they may have been missing something without Day, whose creeping bassline holds the track together nicely whilst the backing vocals chime in the anthem ‘For crying out loud the weekend is over’ alongside the childlike xylophone.
It is a compact single and, although it doesn’t stand out as the freshest track, does creep into your subconscious after a few listens. Like recent tour mates Editors, it is difficult to pinpoint the appeal, just to say that it is a well crafted single, played with heart. All the pieces of the band seem to fit perfectly, leaving us with an optimistic three minutes of music…oh, and a few nuts and bolts left over as always.
Released on 11th August 2008 by Lavolta Records.
