The View: ‘5Rebeccas’

This, the first single to be released from The View’s upcoming second album, suggests that they have not developed their sound significantly since the unveiling of 'Hats Of To The Buskers' in 2007.

The opening bars of '5Rebeccas' amply demonstrates the degree to which the band are still in thrall to the blueprint set down by early Oasis, a fact reinforced by their choice of Owen Morris, chief sonic architect of 'Definitely Maybe', as producer.

The song begins with feedback and a hi-hat and bass drum fill reminiscent of 'Rock N Roll Star', which quickly turns into a clattering, boisterous barrage of drums and blues-rock guitars that is redolent of a less restrained 'She’s Electric'. However, '5Rebeccas' once again proves that it is Kyle Falconer’s beguiling and charismatic vocal delivery that elevates The View above the mundane and ordinary. He proves this once again with a vocal that imbues a rather prosaic recounting of the five Rebeccas he knows, one of whom is a junkie, with a certain amount of charm and lyrical poeticism.

This is an enjoyable, if derivative, slice of pop-punk, but if The View are to have a career with any sort of longevity you feel they will need to introduce new dimensions to their songwriting.
