Entry Wounds
Saturday 4th September 2010

Michelle Collins guest stars as the distraught mother of Simone, a young victim of a college shooting incident, in this feature-length first episode of the new series of the long-running medical drama.

Holby City's laid-back staff nurse Donna is catapulted into the Emergency Department (ED) to help out during the traumatic events, while new nurse Mads joins the team as its latest regular. It's her first job since leaving Pakistan and Mads tries her best to understand instructions but struggles with the stronger regional accents, causing serious problems later on.

Jeff and Dixie treat Maria, who has an injury to her arm. Jeff and Maria flirt and arrange to meet later at Holby College where she works. Dixie pales as she realises what's happened – it's not a serious wound, but Maria has been shot.

A jogger is also brought into the ED. It soon becomes clear that both the jogger and Maria have been shot with ball bearings fired from an air rifle. The staff begin to worry – could the shootings be linked? Noel is further concerned when he finds sinister footage on the internet suggesting worse is to come...

The incident comes to a head at Holby College, bringing terror right into the heart of the fully stretched ED. Seen through the eyes of the team in the emergency department and the victims' traumatised families, the incident tests the team's courage, expertise and, ultimately, the strength of their bonds with each other.

The Blame Game

Saturday 11th September 2010

The press have nicknamed the ED "Hellby" and patients are even refusing to be treated there. As a furious board led by Henry demands answers, Jordan is determined to find a scapegoat, unsettling all the staff in the process. Even the highly experienced Tess and Charlie are feeling the pressure. Will the intense public scrutiny pull the team together or tear them apart?

War veteran Leslie and young boy Amir are brought in to the ED with wounds caused by an explosion. As they are being treated, Amir reveals that he found two hand grenades in Leslie's shed and he still has one with him. Amir pulls the pin and the ED is evacuated, leaving just the two of them and Charlie. It's down to Charlie and Leslie to try to stop Amir from detonating the grenade. Just what is the connection between Leslie and Amir?

Meanwhile, unconcerned by the fallout from the college incident, Ruth arrives at work excited about a new surgical job she's applied for. It should be a formality, especially with new husband Edward to put in a good word for her. With the appointment being announced today, could this be the long-awaited opportunity that ambitious Ruth has been hoping for?

Chaos Theory

Saturday 18th September 2010

As part of his mission to turn the beleaguered emergency department (ED) around in two months, Jordan introduces a new rule which states that patients should be in and out of the ED within two hours. As predicted, the team is unhappy with the rule. Charlie is annoyed that he wasn't consulted and Noel is confused by the system. Only Ruth, with her clipped bedside manner, finds the new regulations to her liking.

Schoolboy Taz is brought into the ED after falling from a school building and Zoe suspects he has taken LSD. Headmistress Mrs Haines, who happens to be the mother of Taz's girlfriend Julie, believes he's supplying LSD to other pupils. When 14 more students are reported with the same symptoms, Mrs Haines realises she has a big problem on her hands. Could the culprit be a little closer to home than she realises?

Shooting victim Simone is brought back into the ED after falling down the stairs and Kirsty suspects that she may have deeper psychological issues. But Simone's mother Camille refuses to listen to Kirsty and is furious about Simone's treatment. Already planning to sue the department over the previous incident in the ED, she now angrily confronts Jordan about the behaviour of his staff.

Ruth falls foul of the new rule system when a patient reveals that she's waited more than four hours for painkillers. But Ruth has greater problems at home. Confused by new husband Edward's lack of physical attention, she plans a night of intimacy for the two of them. Will Edward be seduced by Ruth's charms?

Only The Lonely
Saturday 25th September 2010

It's the grand opening of Jordan's new Clinical Decisions Unit, and Jordan places Adam in charge. But Adam has too much admin work, so delegates the responsibility to Yuki, with Mads – keen to "earn her stripes" – lending a hand. But when Mads convinces Yuki to diagnose a patient's mystery illness with his new toy – a state-of-the art microscope – he neglects his other patients. On discovering what's going on, Jordan is furious and orders Yuki home. And Jordan's problems worsen when Adam relinquishes his admin duties, saying he needs to support his troops on the floor.

Meanwhile, Mads continues to get to grips with working in England and the NHS when she treats a homeless young mother with what appears to be a drug problem. Mads is quick to judge but when she discovers the mother is diabetic and covering her problems to avoid having her baby taken into care, she realises that she still has a lot to learn. Mentor Charlie is on hand to remind her gently that they're there to treat and not to judge.

While walking home Yuki comes across a patient having a fit and, racing back to the hospital with her, he diagnoses her extremely rare condition. Jordan is impressed and – as order is restored to the Clinical Decisions Unit – he concedes that maybe Mads and Yuki don't make such a bad team after all.

Edward invites Ruth out for dinner to apologise for the previous night's argument. She agrees and has her dress dry-cleaned for the occasion. However, Edward remembers previous dinner arrangements and cancels. Ruth hides her disappointment and avoids admitting to the gang that he cancelled her by burying herself in Adam's admin work.
