Casualty: September 2009 - Episode guide

Find out what's coming up this month for the Casualty staff in this month's visits to Holby's Emergency Department!

Saturday 12th September 2009

It is Adam's first day as clinical lead and he's determined to continue the legacy of success left by Jordan, as a new series of the popular medical drama begins. Eight new juniors arrive and Adam jumps at the chance to do some team building. However, some recruits are more enthusiastic than others.

Eager to impress on their first day, the newcomers are keen to go on a call with Adam, but Heather is the one who secures her place. As they head out, Yuki, May and Lenny are left behind. In their eagerness to impress, they cause chaos and are ordered out.

Meanwhile, Adam and Heather arrive at a deserted shopping centre where they are directed to a woman named Ella by security guard Lee. Ella is trapped in an industrial-sized fan.

Adam, Heather, Ella and her boyfriend, Dans, are in more danger than they know. Mr Tweedie, the centre owner, believes the place is deserted and has set up an explosive device to destroy the building. The team hears a rumble and a fireball engulfs them...

Sunday 13th September 2009

As members of the group trapped in the shopping centre start to regain consciousness, Jeff and Polly lead them to safety, in the second part of the explosive series-opener of the medical drama. However, Adam is worried when he can't find Heather and insists on staying behind to search for her. He eventually frees Heather from some rubble but soon realises that he, Ella and Heather are trapped; he doesn't know the way out.

Jeff and Lee slip back into the building, without Dixie and Polly noticing. Jeff wants to rescue the remaining three. Lee has been injured during their escape, though, leaving Adam, Heather and Ella to tend to him while Jeff tries to find help. Jeff, however, collapses on his way out. When no help comes Lee realises that their only chance is to try to climb up the lift shaft to safety. A petrified Heather, though, is too slow, and Adam can only dive for cover when flames engulf her...

Back at the Emergency Department (ED), Jessica is fraught when she realises Adam is trapped inside and sets about organising the F2s, who are overwhelmed by the volume of casualties. As Adam arrives back at the ED he is inconsolable; it's his first day as clinical lead and he feels as if he has failed at the first hurdle.

Saturday 19th September 2009

It's the first shift after after the horrifying events at the shopping centre for the F2s, the group of juniors who have started work at the hospital. All three are nervous and their confidence sinks further when Adam palms them off onto Zoe for the day – he's got too much to deal with in the wake of Heather's accident.

Zoe, equally stressed over her "mother's" illness, divides the trio – Yuki is sent on a shout with Jeff and Polly and Lenny and May are assigned mentors for the day: Lenny with Zoe and May with Ruth. All three struggle in their own way and are banned from treating patients for the rest of the shift.

Later, in a counselling session with Ben, the trio struggle to open up. Eventually, each in turn reveals that recent events have shaken them. Ben identifies that each of them is missing a part of themselves and the three resolve to work on their flaws and soon realise they can help each other by working as a team. As the new team celebrates in the pub later that evening, Zoe slips out to make a call on her mobile...

Sunset Syndrome

Saturday 26th September 2009

A figure from the past returns to Holby to throw Zoe's life and career into turmoil. Tormented by the knowledge that she has made a disastrous personal decision, Zoe's regrets make her determined to give herself and the man she loves a second chance. However, it's a decision that puts her career on the line.

While Zoe's hunt becomes increasingly frantic, her friend struggles with a degenerative illness and refuses to opt for the surgery that could save his life. Conscious that she has let him down in the past, Zoe is determined to help him.

Seriously neglecting her work in the ED and telling colleagues that her mother is ill, Zoe contacts specialist surgeon Walter McFay. Armed with the sick friend's scans, Zoe turns on the charm and tries to persuade Walter to perform the surgery.

Matters soon come to a head when Zoe's friend collapses at his hotel and a cleaner he has befriended, Anamaria, rings the only number in his phone – Zoe's. Can she get to the hospital in time to talk him into life-saving surgery, or will she be forced to say goodbye to him forever?
