Peace, Love And Understanding
Monday 26th July 2010

Lawyer Yvonne (50’s), advises Amy (35) on her divorce. Meanwhile Amy’s husband is advised by lawyer Tim (50’s). Both Yvonne and Tim become fiercer in their approach when they discover which lawyers they are up against. Yvonne meets Julia – an old friend - for lunch and talks about her own divorce, claiming she’s fine. In his office Tim discovers a clip of him dancing in his underpants posted on the internet and takes revenge. Yvonne’s card is rejected when she tries to pay for lunch and she’s pretty sure she knows who’s responsible. Then when Yvonne and Julia get into Yvonne’s car it won’t start. When they look under the bonnet they see the battery cables have been cut. This is the last straw for Yvonne; she’s going to the police to report her husband.

At the station Julia and Yvonne make their statements and Yvonne shows PC Bevan some of the hate mail she’s been receiving. When the women are finished they see Tim enter; Yvonne’s husband. He accuses her of trying to frame him and the two have a blazing row. Julia drags the two of them outside and gets Yvonne to admit she posted the video on the net, but Tim was the one sleeping with his PA! Julia smells a rat and rummages through Yvonne’s bag where she finds a pair of pliers. Tim is smug but Julia turns on him; she knows he wrote the hate mail and he clearly cancelled her credit card. Julia makes the two of them see this has to stop for the sake of their sanity and their reputations. Tim and Yvonne agree to put this behind them. Back at her office Yvonne sees Amy who’s discovered the truth about her and Tim and their warring. She tells Yvonne she and her husband are firing her and Tim. Yvonne sadly advises Amy to try to make her marriage work; it’s not too late for them.

Karen and Immie have been working on Rob all weekend but to no avail; he won’t let her go to Italy with Heston. Karen, however, takes matters into her own hands and tells Heston Immie can go, and tells a thrilled Immie to get packing, but don’t tell Dad! Daniel and Zara spend the afternoon together but when she rejects his offer of dinner Daniel is hurt. Jimmi makes him question if he wants more from Zara. The heel breaks on Michelle’s new shoes so she grumpily takes them back to the shop. When they refuse to give her a refund without a receipt she launches a sit-in, informing the public of their bad service. PC Louis Bevan arrives and tries to calm Michelle, but when she knocks over a display he takes her to the station. Louis is sympathetic to Michelle who breaks down with their pressure of her work lately, and he makes her laugh. When he tells her she can leave we see a hint of reluctance from Michelle. Later Louis arrives at the Mill with a credit note from the shop for her, and asks her out. Michelle accepts and a wide grin spreads across her face. Hook.

Happy Place

Tuesday 27th July 2010

Simon goes to a late patient’s funeral and has to rescue a collapsed pall bearer Barry (35). Barry explains to Simon that he has frequent nightmares about death and can’t even look at a crucifix since his mother died. Barry’s father John (64) is a funeral director who wants Barry to take over the business when he retires, so Barry has a problem. Simon thinks he knows what is wrong with Barry… Later that day John sees Simon at the Campus and shouts at him for making his son think he has Thanatophobia, a fear of death. He tells him to stay away from his son. At lunch Heston mentions Mrs Darlington, a patient who believes the spirit of her husband is in her dog Eric.

Simon has a brainwave and gets Barry to meet him at Mrs Darlington’s house where Mrs Darlington explains she knows her dead husband’s spirit isn’t really in her dog but it helps her to cope with her grief. Back at the funeral home we see Barry building an aviary. He explains to his dad that’ll get a bird for every dead client; he already has one for his mum. Simon arrives and John demands his son gets back to work and give up this nonsense. However Barry refuses to do so without the birds and runs off. Simon picks up the hammer and finishes off what Barry started whilst John watches him stunned. In the crematorium Barry talks to a photo of his mum and then at the bird he has in a cage. Clearly he feels better for having the bird as can look at a crucifix without fear. Barry walks back to where his father and Simon are finishing off the aviary. John picks up the bird declaring Barry’s mum “is a fine bird”.

Daniel asks Zara whether they are in a relationship? Zara tries to laugh it off and Daniel says maybe she’s just not girlfriend material. This riles Zara and she suggests doing something romantic, so Daniel takes her ten pin bowling - an unwelcome new experience for Zara. Daniel teaches her to bowl and then winds her up claiming the kiddie’s ramp is used only by the best. Zara uses the ramp and celebrates her victory until she sees all the children using them. She shouts at Daniel for being childish, accusing him of not really wanting a relationship. Daniel loudly declares otherwise.

As they get their shoes back, Zara invites him back to hers; his ‘girlfriend’ would like to spend the evening with him. Back at hers she tells him she is faking a headache, but as he goes to leave she insists he stays; it’s what girlfriend and boyfriend do. Daniel grumpily tries to sleep as Zara stifles a giggle. Heston and Immie set off for the airport but Jack unwittingly lets this to his dad. A furious Rob races to the Mill but Karen refuses to help him stop them. So Rob speeds towards the airport and pulls Heston’s car over. Heston is shocked Rob hadn’t given permission and apologises. He tells a bereft Immie he can’t take her without her dad’s permission and drives her home. Immie is fuming with Rob and locks herself in her room where she starts trashing it through the tears. Hook.

Small Town Hero

Wednesday 28th July 2010

Luke (14) scrubs away at a charred oven with his bandaged hands. He insists he’s fine to his widowed mother Angela (40’s) and tells her to get ready for the doctors. At the Mill Angela can’t resist, and tells Ruth all about their kitchen fire and how Luke ran in and saved her from the flames. Angela has a check up with Jimmi and insists everything is fine with her anti depressants. Jimmi says he’s around if she ever does want to talk. He then dresses Luke’s burn and tries to get him to open up, asking questions about his mum. Luke is monosyllabic, however, and can’t leave quick enough. In reception, Ruth has phoned the local newspaper, they want to do a piece on Luke, the local hero.

They’re coming to the Mill that afternoon. Angela is thrilled but on the way home Luke loses it with her for making him do the interview. He runs off and Angela frantically searches for him, eventually returning to the Mill. Jimmi consoles Angela who is riddled with guilt, and then the journalist arrives. Meanwhile Luke has packed a bag and is about to leave home when he discovers all of the love letters his mum has been writing to his dead dad. He makes a decision. At the Mill Angela is about to turn the journalist away when Luke arrives. He starts to explain what happened, but struggles to get the words out. Angela sees and interrupts; her son didn’t save her from the fire; he accidentally caused the fire because he was cooking her dinner. She reveals how he does everything for her, cooking, cleaning, comforting when she cries. Luke then speaks up; he can’t do all of those things anymore. Angela is devastated at what she’s done to her little boy and after the journalist has gone she agrees to see Jimmi for a chat. Mother and son leave and Angela insist she will be cooking the dinner from now on.

Daniel has a ‘business meeting’ on the golf course with Jasper, an old friend who’s now a successful plastic surgeon. Daniel fails miserably at the golf but manages to impress Jasper as he exaggerates about his role at the Mill. Jasper makes Daniel an offer of an extremely well-paid job and we see Daniel consider it. That is until Jasper spots a very young customer and makes it clear he is comfortable operating on very young girls. Daniel is disgusted and walks away, for once firmly on the moral high ground.

Gentle Giant
Thursday 29th July 2010

As Thomas (42) returns to his late mother’s home after his release from prison, his neighbour Jan (37) says hello, while Alan (44) and his father Edwin (73, NSE) watch him from a parked van across the street. Later Edwin walks into Thomas’ back garden and spits in his face, inciting a panic attack. Next door, Jan watches a news report about Thomas – who has been found innocent after 20 years in prison for the rape and murder of two women. New DNA evidence has proved that another man was responsible for the killings. Inside his house, Thomas receives a phone call from Alan telling him that if he remains in Letherbridge, he’s dead.

Alan follows Thomas to the Mill where he sees Zara who is sympathetic, recognising the similarities of his case to her father’s, and how being in prison for a crime he didn’t commit has broken Thomas. Meanwhile Alan confronts Karen about the Mill treating a rapist and a killer. Zara talks to Alan, who says they know that Thomas is guilty, and that the DNA evidence is wrong. Back at home, Thomas finds a flyer which says he’s a rapist and a murderer. Jan is supportive and dismissive of the flyer and Thomas asks her for a drink. She can’t go, but says he should go for one and enjoy his freedom. After going to the Icon for a few pints, Alan sees Thomas on his way home and attacks him. Jan finds Thomas and takes him to the Mill where Zara treats him. Zara sees how lost he is and tells him to hang onto the person he was before he went to prison, and strive to be that person again.

Jan takes Thomas home but is concerned by how dazed he looks and so calls Zara. Zara forgoes her lunch to pop round to see him, and asks Jan to keep an eye on him until she gets there. Thomas sits, watching his news report on the TV and ignoring Jan at the door, who has come round with some soup. He looks at his bottles of medication. As Zara arrives, she sees Alan’s van parked outside; concerned she calls the police. Zara sees Thomas through the window and the pills on the floor so quickly enters through the back door. Inside she discovers that Thomas hasn’t taken enough pills to kill himself but she sees an upturned bowl of soup on the floor beside a woman. With horror she realises that Thomas has killed Jan. Childlike, Thomas says that Zara told him to try and be the person that he used to be...and that he did kill the other woman with the man the police now believe did it. Distraught, Zara slowly moves outside. As the police arrive, Zara breaks down, what has she done?

Michelle has a hot date with Louis at lunchtime which goes well. Louis talks of the dangers of his job, which is a big turn on for Michelle, and they kiss and end up back at his.

Karen tries to apologise to Heston for the way Rob spoke to him, adding that Imogen is now not speaking to her father. Karen calls Rob to try and sort the mess out but he doesn’t answer. At home, Imogen and Rob continue to ignore each other. Later Karen works out that he’s gone fishing and goes to find him. She tries to reason with him and tells him to sort it out before it’s too late. At home, Karen tries to get through to Imogen but she says that her dad can rot in hell for all she cares! Hook.
