Finding The Words
Monday 2nd August 2010
Trappist Monk Martin (46) rings the bell at Gills (43) who shouts at him to stay away. Martin goes to the Mill and, writing notes, asks Jimmi for his help in finding someone. Jimmi refuses and Martin, distressed, leaves. Later, Karen gives Jimmi a note from Martin, explaining that 11 years ago he was involved in a car accident which resulted in a seven year old girl slipping into a coma. Jimmi recognises the circumstances and calls Gill, asking if he can see her. At her house, Gill lies to Jimmi and says she hasn’t seen Martin. Amy (18) arrives home and overhears them talking about ‘the accident’ and wants to know all about it.
Gill tells her she was struck by a hit and run driver by the war memorial. Amy’s angry this was kept from her and runs off. Jimmi tells Gill to leave her to calm down. At the memorial, Amy sees and recognises Martin sitting across the road. Mesmerised, she steps out on to the busy road and Martin pushes her out of the way and is hit by a car himself. At St Phil’s, Amy says she recognised Martin and thinks he was there at her accident. Gill says he wasn’t but Amy asks where was Gill on the day of her accident? Jimmi calls Gill to find out how things are with Amy and she shouts at him for stopping her going after Amy earlier.
Worried, Jimmi arrives at St Phil’s where Gill says nothing will be the same now that Amy has met Martin. Jimmi asks if she knew him before the car crash but Gill doesn’t answer. She goes to see Martin who tells her he’s never stopped thinking about Amy…or her. Jimmi brings Amy into the room and Gill discovers that Martin saved Amy’s life. Moved, Gill decides it’s time to tell the truth – Martin was driving the car during Amy’s accident and hadn’t fitted her seatbelt; he’s her father. Jimmi leaves, allowing the fragile family a chance to reunite.
At the Campus, Ruth tries to cheer Simon up after the assault on Friday but he shuts her out again. Ruth tells Zara about Simon, and Zara decides she’s the one to sort him out and takes him for lunch at the Icon. Simon tells Zara how useless he feels and Zara is supportive for once. She suggests an astronomy weekend and produces a flyer for Simon. She also tells him he owes Ruth an apology. He does apologise and it looks like he’s feeling better, however after Ruth leaves he starts to sob.
Anna asks Michelle to sit with a patient in critical care. She does, and talks to him about Louis, and eventually the patient responds. He’s distressed, asking what happened to him – all he can remember is the smell of burning. Michelle is told that Gary’s family can’t be contacted, so for the moment she’s all he’s got. Later Gary tells Michelle there is someone she could contact – his friend Jack Hollins. Michelle is shocked and says she will. He asks her to call him Gaz. Michelle goes to the Hollins’ house and both Immie and Jack are distraught to hear the news.
Healer
Tuesday 3rd August 2010
At the ‘Letherbridge Alternative’ Jade (27) is in the middle of another disastrous consultation which results in her patient running out. As the practice is deserted, Jade goes out to get some fresh air. Meanwhile Karen opens the door to let in handsome Richard (25). Rob, home early from work, pulls up outside. Karen hears him and panics, pushing Richard into a cupboard. Rob comes in and finds a brochure for Conservatories and Richard, pretending to be measuring the inside of the cupboard. Rob tells him to leave and has a row with Karen, then storms off to go fishing. He sits at the canal with Martin (52) who says they’re better off without women. Rob agrees and discovers that Martin is divorced and has a son and a daughter.
Later as Rob is rubbing his sore feet, Jade passes and makes a comment, telling him she’s a reflexologist. She gives him her business card but Martin is dismissive of her. Now exasperated with both Karen and Martin, Rob leaves for ‘Letherbridge Alternative’. Karen meanwhile goes to see Richard in his shop and signs a 10 year finance deal to buy a conservatory. As Jade starts to feel Rob’s feet she reads him and they discuss his argument with Karen until Rob becomes uneasy and leaves. Later, Jade arrives at his house with the maggots he’d left behind. Rob tries to get rid of her but she breaks down into tears so he lets her come inside. Jade explains she keeps scaring patients away with her intensity, but Rob allays her fears.
Karen gets home from shopping, and Rob has to confess that Jade is his reflexologist and another argument ignites. To make Jade feel valued, Rob suggests they let her try and resolve their problems. Jade lights some incense candles and unwittingly gets them to reunite as they try to take her seriously. Job done, Jade leaves, satisfied. Karen then confesses to Rob about the conservatory but as he looks at the paperwork we see Richard studying Karen’s signature which says ‘Minnie Mouse.’ He tears the contract in two. On the canal, Jade goes to talk to Martin and only then do we realise that she is Martin’s daughter, and that Richard is his son.
Jack and Immie mope around about Gaz, so Karen tells them to go and see him. At Housman Ward, they’re horrified to see the burns on Gaz’s face. When Gaz comes round Imogen sobs and runs out and Jack runs after her. Later, they return and see Gaz sobbing and asking for his Mum. As Gaz recalls what happened to him, Jack becomes more and more angry about the situation in Afghanistan and the lack of resources for the armed forces. Angrily he says he’ll write something about it in the student magazine, and Michelle asks him to leave. Imogen takes Jack off, leaving Gaz upset, but she returns later to let Michelle know she’ll be back tomorrow.
The Big Picture
Wednesday 4th August 2010
Michelle daydreams about her afternoon with Louis - only 16 minutes left of her half day. May (82) comes into the Campus with a covered cat basket. She thinks Michelle is called Lizzie and seems confused, so Michelle passes her on to Heston. May passes Heston’s mental state test, so when she asks Heston to look at her cat, Heston palms her back on to Michelle. In the nurses room they discover that the cat, Joey, has gone missing. With no sign of the cat in the Campus, Michelle tells May that Ruth will get her a cab home. Michelle finally leaves, but outside, as she passes a garage near the Campus, she hears banging and May’s voice – she got trapped inside looking for Joey. Frustrated, Michelle takes May home herself.
When they get there Michelle rings a mobile number for ‘Eddie’ that she finds on the fridge and leaves a concerned message about May. About to leave, Michelle discovers May has left on an unlit gas ring and so decides to stay for lunch. Joey the cat shows up and Michelle agrees to take him to the vet on her way home. Outside, May’s neighbour Mandy (20s) accuses Michelle of stealing her cat and Eddie (30s) arrives in a cab. May comes out and seems confused which worries Eddie, (May’s granddaughter) who’s just back from a tour in Afghanistan.
Inside, Eddie says May is normally as sharp as a tack so something’s not right. May realises that Mandy’s cat isn’t her Joey because her cat loved her tins of condensed milk, so she’s been having it herself. Michelle sees several ancient empty tins on the drainer, and so with May and Eddie goes back to the campus surgery and takes Heston one of the cans to investigate. Heston thinks he’s got to the bottom of it – after the war some milk products were manufactured in rimless cans, which were sealed with lead – so it looks like May has lead poisoning. But with some treatment she should hopefully be alright. However Michelle has missed her afternoon with Lewis.
Jack and Immie arrive at Housman to see Gaz but Jack makes the excuse that he has to interview Anna for the student magazine and leaves. Immie goes in to see Gaz alone. It’s awkward, but they start to bond and Immie shows Gaz some of her drawings. Gaz asks her to draw him and when he sees it he decides he’s still himself and is uplifted. Jack meets Anna in Housman and they decide to do the interview in the Icon over a beer. Anna talks about the camaraderie of the Army and learning a trade but Jack asks about the cause – what is all this for? Anna tells him about finding a roadside casualty in Afghanistan, an army nurse called Lucy who died. Later she treated the bomber that killed Lucy, and she saved him. Jack realises that Lucy was her partner and is left with a newfound respect for Anna. He decides to go back and see Gaz.
Five Seconds
Thursday 5th August 2010
New dad Johnny (33) realises that he and his wife haven’t slept together for 99 days and tries to talk to his wife Laura (30) about it. She snaps and asks him to stop thinking about it for five seconds, saying goodbye to baby Poppy before she leaves. Johnny sighs, and with Poppy goes over to their neighbour Bev (30s) with an envelope that Laura has asked him to deliver. Bev is pleased to see him, and invites him inside for lunch before he heads to the Mill for Poppy’s appointment. Bev’s gives him a birthday present and Johnny is touched, but a thank you hug and kiss become more when Bev kisses him. Johnny pushes her away and leaves. At the turning to the Mill, Johnny sees a beautiful woman walking past and our story takes two paths; one where he drives into the Mill car park and takes the last space, and one where he is so caught up by the passing woman that he stalls, and the driver before him gets the last parking space.
In the first path, Johnny manages to catch Heston before he leaves for the day. Heston assures Johnny that Poppy is fine and when Johnny explains his sexual frustration, Heston advises him to turn on the romance. He asks him what Laura would love him to do, and Johnny says she’d love him to shave off his beard, so he does and calls Laura to ask her out that night. Laura confesses she’d already planned a surprise evening for his birthday but Johnny insists they go out. After dinner they arrive home and Johnny makes his move in bed but she asks him not to spoil things. Johnny realises it’s now past midnight and it’s now 100 days that they haven’t slept together…!
In the second path, because Johnny has to park elsewhere, he misses Heston and has to see Charlie. Charlie – predictably – thinks Johnny’s dilemma is disgraceful and that Johnny just has to be firm with Laura. Energised, Johnny goes to Laura’s office and lays down the law – he has needs. He accuses her of forgetting his birthday and she says she was going to surprise him but Johnny says he’s going out on his own. We then see him back outside Bev’s house where he says sorry to Poppy and goes inside – and we know the two of them are going to cross a big red line…
Back to the moment outside the Mill with the beautiful girl. This time Johnny stalls, then starts his car quickly, and ends up hitting the driver who is trying to pass in front of him. This delays him from seeing anyone and Johnny ends up back at Bev’s for advice instead. Bev does the noble thing and tells him that Laura misses him too. The envelope he brought earlier is her instructions – she’s babysitting Poppy tonight. Later we see that Laura has made a meal for them at home and turned the living room into a very intimate restaurant. Relaxed, Laura opens up about how difficult things are for her as a new mum with a career – about how she feels tired and guilty all the time. They look at each other for five seconds, which is all that was missing from the last 99 days. They kiss and we see the happiness and relief in Johnny’s face as they get up to leave and go upstairs…
Daddy’s Home
Friday 6th August 2010
At the Campus Surgery, Cliff fan Donna Bramwell (20) sees Daniel and is asked to bring a urine sample in the following day. In reception her older sister Ann Turnbull (32) checks to see if her own results are back – they’re not. Donna answers a phone call and is excited as her Daddy’s coming home! Donna hasn’t seen Tom in 10 years, but Ann is appalled as he’s not her father and she doesn’t think Donna should see him. Donna says she got in contact with Tom as she needs a family member to donate a kidney. Back at the house, Tom Gutteridge (54) arrives - an aging Rocker!
Donna offers Tom a selection of cakes but he’s more interested in the whisky. Back at the Campus Karen is concerned with Ann’s test results, and calls her but Donna tells her to call back later. Ann shows signs of illness while Donna gets caught up in a fantasy of the happy reunion and Tom drinks more whiskey until he finally snaps and tells Donna she’s not his daughter! He says he wouldn’t try to help save her; he just wants what he’s owed. Donna reveals she lied and told Tom they’d sold their mother’s jewellery. Angry he sweeps Donna’s precious Cliff Richard album collection off the table, and as pushes Ann against the wall she starts to have difficulty breathing. Donna attacks Tom, he turns on her, and then Ann uses the last of her strength to hit him telling Donna to run. Karen, meanwhile, has arrived to see Ann as Donna comes rushing out. Screams can be heard from inside and Karen runs in.
Ann lies semi-conscious on the floor as Tom tears the place apart looking for the jewellery. Karen shouts ‘Stop – Police!’ and Tom runs. Donna shows some maturity as she grabs Ann’s diabetic kit and injects her with the glucose she badly needs. Karen wants to call Rob and send Ann to hospital but she refuses, but agrees to see Daniel. Ann explains that Tom was someone they hoped would be a donor for Donna, but Donna has to admit she doesn’t need a transplant, she only has a kidney infection. Ann is upset and rushes into the kitchen and Karen follows. Ann blames herself as Donna was 10 when their mum died and Tom left, and Ann let Donna block out the bad bits and live in a bubble – which she still does. Donna enters and Karen suggests Ann can help her grow up. Ann lays down some ground rules, and Donna agrees, but she won’t give up Cliff!
Michelle is working in the Housman Ward with Anna when Andy Millett arrives in uniform, clean shaven, haircut and a prosthetic leg. Later he tells Michelle he’s staying in the Army. He apologises for being a prat when they first met and thanks Michelle for giving him good advice. Later Michelle and Louis are out jogging and come across an assault course. Michelle completes the course leaving Louis to enquire if she’s spending too much time with the squaddies? Michelle assures him she’s only interested in one type of uniform - but there’s something she’s not telling him.
At the Campus Ruth asks Cherry how Simon’s lip is, and then realises that Cherry didn’t know about it. Cherry is upset that he kept it from her and goes home for lunch to talk to Simon about it. She tells him she’s hurt he didn’t confide in her, but Simon tries to reassure her that she’s a good friend. At the Mill, Julia finds Heston to tell him she’s had a call from a friend at the PCT. There’s a potential business opportunity for taking over Sutton Vale Surgery; both are excited about the idea of expanding the empire.
