Visible Wounds
Monday 19th July 2010

At Housman, Matt Branscombe (28) plays cards with wife Lucy (29) but when he struggles to understand the rules his frustration makes him hit out, and he catches Lucy in the face. After treating Lucy, Anna reveals to Michelle that Matt has a brain injury and will probably never get better but he’s a true hero. Anna tries to tell Lucy that Matt will never be cured but she is adamant that he must come home with her and their daughter Gemma (8), and that she can look after him. Anna is concerned that Lucy is in denial. Soon after Gemma refuses to go in and see her dad and Michelle finds Lucy crying outside; she admits that looking after Matt is like having two children and Gemma is terrified of him.

Michelle suggests a good old game of catch which the family enjoy together, with Matt and Gemma bonding until his frustration causes him to push her over a bit too roughly. Anna is furious with Michelle, but Lucy says it’s helped her get things in perspective – she knows she has to choose between her husband and daughter and Gemma will always come first. She tells Matt he won’t be coming home but that they’ll visit and he’ll be with the lads – he seems happy. Lucy says goodbye to Matt and she and Gemma listen to one of his old messages as they drive away.

Anna wants Michelle to talk to Chris about his progress, as he won’t open up at the moment. Later Anna confronts Chris saying she saw him move his foot – he angrily tells her it was just a spasm. Michelle overhears Chris telling Anna a different version of events of what happened to Jess to what he previously told her. She tells Anna who says it’s probably down to stress. Cherry is still trying to avoid Daniel and Jimmi. Daniel tells Zara that he never slept with Cherry but just played a joke on her to make her think she had. He also tells Zara that he has to grovel to Jimmi so that he doesn’t go through with kicking him out. Zara realises why Jimmi is upset with Daniel but tells Daniel he has to work it out for himself.

Cherry, meanwhile, tells Simon she thinks she’s blown her chances with Jimmi. When Jimmi arrives home he’s annoyed that Daniel hasn’t packed his bags and Daniel grovels! Jimmi angrily tells Daniel he is sick of him trawling his floozies through the house and finally Daniel understands; Jimmi is so annoyed because he thinks Daniel slept with Cherry. Daniel tells Jimmi he didn’t sleep with Cherry and that Cherry fancies Jimmi why else would she be avoiding him! Daniel tells Jimmi to call her but he wimps out…

Back To School

Tuesday 20th July 2010

As Simon tells Cherry of his talk at a school that day, his teacher friend Jamie Dawes (26) looks terrified as he and deputy head Francesca Prior (28) are almost caught in flagrante by student Blaise (16). Simon waits for Jamie in the staff room; he is introduced to Francesca and notes her squeeze Jamie’s bum as they walk away. In front of the class Simon’s talk isn’t going to be as easy as he thought, when Blaise gives Jamie lots of cheek he wonders why he doesn’t do anything. Blaise starts asking awkward questions and says she saw a couple at it in the school gym last night – suddenly Jamie has a panic attack. Blaise and the class are impressed by Simon and ask him to return that afternoon.

At a café for lunch Simon introduces Cherry to Jamie, and when Jamie takes a call from Francesca, Simon confesses to Cherry that he thinks Blaise caught the two of them having sex. Back at school Francesca warns Jamie that she’ll deal with the situation with Blaise, and Jamie tells Simon that he’s caught between Blaise and Francesca. During the afternoon Blaise is genuinely interested in a career in medicine, and Jamie says he will help her change her subjects to pursue it. But Francesca has other ideas and calls Blaise’s mother claiming she caused Jamie’s panic attack and she’ll get her suspended. Jamie is appalled but doesn’t get in her way and Simon can’t believe it - Blaise is innocent. Jamie finally confesses to Blaise’s mother that Blaise is innocent, his panic attack could have happened anytime, and Blaise says she could have seen anyone in the gym. Francesca finally relents and allows Blaise to stay and change her subjects. Relieved Jamie hands in his notice; he’s finished with teaching.

Cherry is wallowing in her Jimmi gloom so Simon suggests she come to Nottingham with him, She agrees as she has an aunt who lives in Nottingham who she can go and see. She arrives at Rettie Harmon’s (55) to find a ‘for sale’ sign up. Uncle Brian has left Rettie for Lorraine Musky from next door. Rettie is convinced the Malone women are destined to be alone, and so cornered, Cherry tells her she has a nice boyfriend called Jimmi. After lunch, with Simon having to go back to school, Cherry reluctantly returns to Rettie’s and they go shopping. Rettie tells Cherry she needs to keep hold of her doctor because they have a wandering eye and her bitterness returns with a vengeance when she spots Uncle Brian out with Lorraine. Cherry eventually discovers the truth though; Rettie actually had an affair with Lorraine’s husband! Cherry tells her there is more to life than men but will Rettie ever learn?

Day Zero

Wednesday
21st July 2010

It’s Karen’s first day as a Health Care Assistant (HCA) and Cherry is wary of her getting carried away. One of their patients Carl (21) is visibly nervous around Karen who is sure she recognises him. Carl has been doing a clinical trial for a blood pressure drug and is starting to feel dizzy. Cherry discovers that Carl registered six months ago and Karen forgot to chase up his previous GP history. Karen tries to make amends and asks him for his previous GP’s name, but Carl claims he doesn’t know and that his mother (who would know) isn’t contactable. Cherry tells him he needs to go back to the trial company to have a review, but he rushes out agitated. Karen smells a rat and Cherry agrees and calls Carl to try and get him back in. He won’t listen to her so Karen asks to speak to him, and says if he doesn’t, they’ll call the drug company that Carl won’t cooperate with them and then he won’t get his money. Carl agrees to come back in. Cherry asks Carl for the dosage chart again for the drugs trial so she can talk to Daniel about it, and Karen realises it’s a different dosage chart to earlier; he is doing two trials.

Carl reluctantly admits the truth; he managed to register with two GP surgeries under two different surnames and therefore get on two trials. Carl explains that his fiancé is pregnant and he wanted to earn some money whilst he finishes his degree. Karen doesn’t believe his sob story and wants to report him to the police but then Carl’s very pregnant girlfriend Megan (21) arrives. Cherry admires her engagement ring and softened she tells Carl he must quit both trials and cooperate with them, getting frequent check ups. The couple agree, relieved, whilst Karen seethes. At the end of the day Cherry gives Karen a gentle slap on the wrist for being so vocal about her opinions but she admits Karen did well in her actual HCA work. Back at home Karen selectively relates today’s events to her family, proud of herself!

Imogen keeps texting someone and Jack teases her, assuming it’s a boyfriend. Later, it’s a surprise to see she’s secretly meeting up with Heston! He gives her a bundle of art books which they peruse together. When Heston discovers Immie has never been to an art gallery he insists she goes to the Barber Institute for starters. Immie nervously asks him to show her around and Heston is thrilled. Chris is in a mood but Michelle tries to get him out of it and gets him to admit he has feeling back in his legs. She assures him his body is healing and Chris lets himself be optimistic. Later Colonel Barker visits Chris and tells him he’s arranging a phone call between Chris and his sergeant in Bastion. However Chris refuses to talk to him, giving no reason as to why.

Anna suggests its survivor’s guilt, but Michelle takes matters into her own hands and pushes Chris’ wheelchair into a room where Barker is waiting with the phone. Reluctantly Chris takes the call and enjoys some banter with his sergeant and the other men. As soon as the subject turns to Jess Chris chokes and gives the phone back to Barker. When in Critical Care Michelle sees something that makes her immediately wheel Chris to a surprise destination. Outside Jess’ room she tells him she’s awake. Chris claims its great news but wheels himself away quickly. Michelle wonders what’s going on.

Not Otherwise

Thursday
22nd July 2010

War photographer Kelly, (40), sees Charlie for an insurance medical. Charlie clearly is intimidated by the domineering woman in front of him and when he asks about her diabetes he takes her word for it that all is fine. He gives her the all clear and promises to send the forms off immediately for her. Later in the park having his lunch, Charlie sees Kelly struggling to take a photo for a couple of tourists, but he shrugs it off. When Kelly arrives home her wife Gillian berates her; she found her luggage and knows she’s off on another assignment.

Kelly tells Gillian she’s been cleared to travel but Gillian knows she’s not well. She then sees that Kelly has wet herself. Kelly changes her clothes and brushes off the accident, claiming Gillian is just jealous she only gets to teach what Kelly does. Gillian goes to see Charlie, demanding to know why he cleared Kelly to travel when her diabetes is getting worse. Charlie pales as he remembers what he saw earlier; Kelly may have retinopathy. Charlie then reveals to Gillian that Kelly said she was flying out today. She and Charlie rush back to the house but Kelly has gone, leaving a letter explaining she won’t be back.

Charlie drives them to the airport and on the way they see a taxi pulled over with paramedics attending Kelly. She collapsed in the back of the taxi. At St Phil’s Kelly reluctantly admits she planned to walk in front of gunfire and make it look like an accident so that Gillian could get the insurance. She reveals she has Wolfram’s syndrome and is going blind; she’s hidden her condition nearly all of her life. Kelly believes without her sight she’s nothing, but Gillian offers to be her eyes and the two kiss.

Heston meets Immie at the Art Gallery and is a little disappointed that she’s brought her mouthy friend Simone (17) along. Heston and Immie enjoy the art but Simone keeps on ridiculing Heston and eventually Immie tells her to leave. Both of them enjoy each others’ perspectives on the art and Immie reveals a little of how she feels about Gaz. Michelle talks to Ruth about her work at Housman, revealing how worried she is about Chris’ strange behaviour. Meanwhile Chris reluctantly visits Jess, who remembers little of the attack and thanks him for saving her life. Chris tells her to get better and leaves, clearly emotional. Later Col. Barker visits him and announces he is being awarded a medal for bravery. Chris is speechless.

Army Dreamers

Friday 23rd July 2010

Heston is inspired by his trip to the art gallery with Immie. So much so, that he asks Karen if Immie can go on holiday to his Villa in Italy with him; he can show her the art and architecture there. Karen is excited, as is Immie, but they tell Heston they have to check with Rob first. That night when they tell Rob the plan, his response is simply “over my dead body”. He’s deeply disturbed a middle aged man would want to take his daughter away, and neither Karen nor Immie can change his mind. Immie sobs on her bed as her mum comforts her.

Meanwhile at Housman, Chris has his final assessments and passes them physically and mentally. He’s told he can go to Finley Court the next day where he can work towards being rehabilitated. Chris is thrilled but when Michelle suggests he see Jess again his mood darkens. Jess asks Chris questions about what exactly happened to her, in the hope it will help her remember. Chris starts to tell her but he is clearly uncomfortable and starts suffering from chest pains. Michelle and Anna treat him and as the symptoms subside they presume it’s due to stress.

However, Michelle mentions to Anna how Chris’ story keeps changing, and how he hid the recovery in his leg. Anna suggests he just needs to believe he’s ready to start his life again; perhaps Michelle could take him out? Michelle wheels a thrilled Chris to a local pub and he enjoys flirting with the barmaid. When she asks if they can take a photo for the local paper of Chris the war hero, he flips out and leaves. Michelle follows him and Chris blurts out that he left Jess for dead when she was injured, he didn’t even strap her leg up… he just ran. Chris tells Michelle to inform Col Barker; he doesn’t deserve to be a soldier. He asks her to leave but Michelle just holds him as he cries.

Back at Housman Anna tells Chris she also ran away, ran away from her work on the frontline so she could hide at Housman - she’s scared too. However Anna can’t keep his revelation secret so she goes to tell Barker. When the Colonel arrives he tells Chris he won’t receive his medal but he will be able to stay in the army. Chris is in shock; Jess nearly died because of him and they’re letting him off? Barker explains that Chris has learnt from his mistakes and they need experienced resilient soldiers now more than ever. That is if Chris still wants the job? He smiles. Michelle says her goodbyes to Chris and they hug. As Michelle rushes off to deal with an emergency we see Chris contemplating his future.
