Wedded Miss

Monday 9th August 2010

In a hotel room bride-to-be Sarah Castle (26) opens the door to best man Anthony Goff (26) – what is he doing here? At the Mill, Cherry tells Ruth she’s panicking about her reading at a friends wedding – she hasn’t even met the bride! The flustered groom Sean Wilkes (26) arrives. He’s messed up the honeymoon and has a hangover, so Cherry abandons work early to help. At the hotel, Sean and Cherry find an annoyed Sarah with Anthony. Sarah storms off so Cherry follows to help. Anthony takes a deep breath and tries to tell Sean something, but Sarah returns and Sean goes to get the Registrar. As Cherry returns to the room she’s shocked to see Sarah kissing Anthony.

As Sarah walks down the aisle Cherry quietly confronts Anthony, and then asks the Registrar to leave. Anthony insists Cherry has got it all wrong; he only pretended he fancied Sarah to get proof that she’s after Sean’s money. Sean says she’s a rubbish gold-digger considering his father’s business is in debt. Sarah goes quiet and then flees the room.

Later in the bar, Anthony apologises to Sean for what happened, but he had to make Sean see what she was like. Sean says he knows Anthony fancies him, and Anthony says he knows Sean’s not gay and might lose him as a friend, but he had to save him anyway. Anthony walks away but Sean tells him he’ll call him about going for a pint sometime. Outside Anthony bumps into Cherry – she’s sure there’s a Mr Right for him. Cherry is left thinking about her own Mr Right.

At the Mill Julia asks Jimmi and Zara if one of them will attend a PCT pilot programme on Homeopathy – both are reluctant, Jimmi thinks it’s a waste of time. Karen and Ruth defend it. Heston arrives and adds to the argument against. Later Heston sees Janet Davies and discovers she hasn’t been taking her arthritis medication. He’s stunned when she reveals she wants to try homeopathy. He gently advises against it but as she extols its virtues and those of Dr Diana who is opening a new homeopathy clinic, Heston loses it! Homeopathy is nothing more than a scientific joke and anyone who thinks otherwise is a buffoon! Outside the surgery an excited Mrs Davies listens to a recording of Heston on her mobile phone. Heston looks at Dr Diana’s website and tells Julia he was right, Dr Diana is a charlatan – her degree is from a correspondence course! Julia insists that the PCT initiative has nothing to do with Dr Diana but Heston can’t be swayed.

At Housman a helicopter is on its way in. Michelle is full of nerves but takes charge as a patient’s heart arrests. Later she talks to Anna, looking after old ladies and handing out condoms seem so trivial in comparison. She’s going to be 30 on Saturday… maybe it should be life changing…

Time To Go

Tuesday 10th August 2010

Outside the Campus Surgery, Security Guard Barry Biglow harangues a dog walker as they put a bag of dog poo in the regular litter bin. Later, out of uniform he comes across Ruth, on a half day, standing at the bus stop. After staring at her he finally tells her he knows her – she was with that nutter who tried to chuck himself off the roof! Ruth starts walking away – Barry follows and tells her he now works on Letherbridge Campus. Ruth asks him to leave her alone – she’s going to miss her film. Barry offers to go with her. Outside the cinema Ruth tries again, but Barry reassures her, he won’t sit next to her, so she gives in. At the end of the film Ruth is surprised when he starts to walk away.

Barry explains he’s got to take his dog Mia to the vets to be put to sleep. Ruth is surprised; why sit through a movie then? Barry explains Mia would have known something was wrong if he went home early. Ruth offers to go with him… They leave his flat with Mia but after a few steps she stops walking; Barry lovingly picks her up and carries her. At the vet’s Ruth stays outside, holding the dog lead. A while later, Barry emerges stony-faced but angry that he doesn’t have a garden, or £160 – so he has to leave Mia at the vets. Ruth tries to comfort but Barry shrugs her off and walks away.

Vera Corrigan receives some shocking news from her daughter Michelle and is furious when Michelle cuts the call off before Vera has finished. As she walks into the Campus, Michelle switches off her phone and asks Ruth to tell her Mum, if she calls, that she hasn’t seen her. Later that morning a stunned Ruth takes in Michelle’s news – she’s made a life changing decision. Michelle explains she told her mum over the phone so that she could get used to the idea before they spoke in person. Vera arrives and Michelle hides in the staff room as Ruth lies that she’s not seen her. Vera heads off to the Mill and finds Julia.

Vera accuses Julia and Heston of being behind Michelle’s decision, but it eventually sinks in that they didn’t know. Michelle finally goes to see Vera to talk to her about her decision. As Vera smashes around the kitchen it is clear that she is not coping with the news but finally she talks to Michelle. At the Mill, Julia waves the newspaper at Heston furiously – he is directly quoted criticising PCT Policies. Heston defends his right to an opinion but realises he’s been set up by patient Mrs Davies. Furious he says he’ll demand a retraction and full apology. Daniel tells Heston he needs to retract what he’s said – forget about the moral high ground, or he threatens to kill Julia’s expansion plans for the surgery.

The Long Way Round: Part 1

Wednesday 11th August 2010

At a car crash, one driver has fled the scene; the other Amrit Janda (20’s) is unconscious. Saleem Ashgari (16) tries to wake his Uncle, but hears a Police siren and so runs. Nearby Monica Platt (30’s) finds Saleem hiding in the bushes and calls Simon. He thinks Saleem is homeless and has scabies. Neighbour Kimiya McKenzie arrives. Saleem doesn’t speak English so Kim starts talking to him in Farsi and discovers he’s 16, from Afghanistan visiting his ‘Uncle’, and she suspects an illegal immigrant. Simon takes Saleem to Social Worker Wendy Orchard, who starts the process to get him into the immigration system. At St Phil’s, PC Louis Bevan speaks to Amrit, who says he can’t remember anything about the crash. Finally he asks if his nephew was found?

Meanwhile Simon is surprised when Saleem turns up at the Campus Surgery with a letter from Social Services asking to get a medical check up. Simon tries to get an interpreter but in the end calls Kim. Saleem insists he is 16 and that Simon needs to do a medical assessment to prove his age. Simon tries to tell Saleem that he can’t help and that he needs to see a specialist Paediatrician for age determination. Prompted by Saleem, Kim explains he’s here because the Elders were trying to make him join the army of a local warlord and his mother paid someone to bring him to the UK. At St Phil’s, Louis tells Amrit they’ve tracked down Saleem, and after Louis has gone, Amrit leaves the hospital.

Outside Social Services Wendy gives Saleem a map to a refugee hostel for the night and a train ticket to get to an Asylum Screening Unit. It’s clear Saleem doesn’t understand so she goes inside to get her keys. Amrit pulls up in a stolen car and tells him to get in. Saleem finds himself at a house back on Monica’s street, but as he enters he’s met with a blast of heat, and plant pots of tiny cannabis seedlings everywhere. Amrit opens the door to a larder which has a grimy mattress, water and plant food for Saleem and leaves locking the door behind him.

Heston arrives at the Mill and is met by reporters led by Bex Ranger (20’s). Julia ushers Heston inside, and warns everyone not to say a word to the press or their patients. Heston decides to take Mrs Davies off their patient list which Julia argues against. At the Campus, Cherry gets a text from a friend telling her that Dr Diana has just moved into her clinic. Cherry goes to take a look and spots Mrs Davies going inside. When she comes out Cherry accosts her and discovers she was asked to record Heston by Dr Diana who said it was only research. Later that afternoon Julia calls Michelle to her office to ask her if her decision is true? Michelle confirms it is and that she wants to leave at the end of the week, and then tells the others before afternoon surgery starts.

The Long Way Round: Part 2

Thursday 12th August 2010

At the back of the Cannabis House, Saleem tries to open a window but is hit by an electric shock. Over the road, Monica and Kim talk about the noise coming from the house. Kim decides to go over and also gets an electric shock from the window. Monica finds Kim and dials 999, and Kim tells her she saw a face at the window. Smoke starts to pour from the windows and when Rob and PC Louis Bevan arrive, they break the back door open. They see the cannabis plants and find Saleem cowering in the larder. Rob pulls him out and Kim realises it’s Saleem.

At the Police Station Saleem is examined by Jimmi who finds the prescription made out by Simon the day before. Louis reports back to Rob about Amrit disappearing from the hospital: both addresses for him were fake and the car was stolen. Simon bumps into Louis on his way to see Michelle and suggests that Saleem is an innocent victim who was trafficked into the UK. Kim and Monica go to the Police Station where they meet Wendy, and argue for Saleem to be given the benefit of the doubt. When they return home Kim notices Amrit watching the house and tells Monica to fetch the Police.

Amrit starts to run but he’s no match for Louis. As Amrit is led into a cell, he sees Saleem but tells Louis he’s never seen him before. Wendy tells Louis she’s reviewed the case and they’re accepting Saleem as 16 so she’ll sit in for the interview. At the end of the day Rob tells Louis Amrit admitted Saleem was trafficked into the country. Outside a Hostel, Simon gives Saleem a tube of scabies lotion and Wendy explains the next stage will be an Asylum Claim and a Court Case. Monica and Kim arrive with new clothes and trainers for Saleem – touched by their kindness he offers Kim his battered Koran.

Louis tells Rob he thinks it’s serious between him and Michelle, and Rob advises him to be upfront with Michelle. Michelle meets Ruth at the Icon Bar for lunch. As they say goodbye, Ruth asks how Louis took the news... Michelle admits she hasn’t told him. At the end of the day Michelle meets Louis from work – he’s been thinking about her all day, Michelle looks at him, I’m really sorry... In the Staff Room at the Mill, the team listen as Bex Ranger reports that many other GP’s have come out in support of Heston. Julia enters – the PCT are furious and there’s no way they’ll support their application for a third surgery now. Heston goes to see Dr Diana and she admits she used Heston and Mrs Davies for publicity.

Heston asks what if Mrs Davies had seen another doctor? Diana reminds him of a paper he wrote many years ago attacking homeopathy – she left nothing to chance. When Heston returns to the Mill Julia has to stop him from talking to the Reporters. He wants to tell them the truth and becomes angry. Julia tries to reassure him that she is on his side when suddenly he collapses... Julia calls Daniel who hurries in followed by Zara - call 999, it’s his heart.

Canute

Friday 13th August 2010

Harry Doherty (66) prepares for battle. His wife Joy Doherty (63) peers through the net curtains. Outside with the demolition experts, surveyors, bailiffs and removal men, PC Louis Bevan hands Rob the eviction notice. They look up at the old Victorian House, and Harry leans out of the window ‘No Concessions! No Surrender!’ Jimmi then appears; Harry has been having chest pains. Rob is reluctant to let Jimmi in as the house could collapse. Harry also insists he doesn’t need a doctor, but Joy made the call and lets him in. As Jimmi examines Harry his high blood pressure is attributed to the stress of the eviction. Outside daughter Kate Doherty arrives. She wants her parents out too. Rob offers her 15 minutes before he arrests them for obstruction. Jimmi wants to send Harry to hospital for tests but Harry refuses - if he leaves they’ll have the wreckers in, in minutes!

As Kate enters he scoffs at her assertion that she’s there to clear the air. Outside Louis tells Rob that Michelle broke off their relationship. Kate finds Harry reminiscing at a kiddie height chart on the wall – it’s been there since she was little. She asks him to walk away but he can’t. As tiles start to fall from the roof Harry storms downstairs, and tells Joy she’s not leaving. Joy tells him she’s found a nice flat, but Harry will not be moved and so Joy picks up her case and leaves. Rob ushers Joy and Kate to safety as Harry heads back upstairs and locks himself in the bedroom. Jimmi is talking to Harry who says the house is all he has left. Rob appears and Jimmi is alarmed by an uncharacteristic silence. The door is shouldered open and they find Harry lying on the floor. Rob rushes to fetch the paramedics and the demolition team move into action as Harry is wheeled into an ambulance. Joy approaches and takes his hand in support. She talks to Jimmi who is shocked to realise that she was happy to escape Harry, but can’t leave him now.

At St Phil’s Julia visits Heston. He didn’t have a heart attack, but she appeals to him to rest and let the Dr Diana thing go. Later a dozing Heston is alarmed to find Dr Diana beside his bed. She explains she hoped for a truce and Heston says he’d be happy to never see her again. After she leaves, Simon arrives with information Heston asked him for about Dr Diana’s background. Heston is delighted; Dr Diana will rue the day she took him on!

As Michelle leaves the Mill for her last shift at Housman everyone is busy and feeling unloved she leaves. After her shift at Housman she goes back to the Mill to pick up her belongings when Louis arrives, with an eternity bracelet. Michelle is sorry; she doesn’t want a long distance relationship. He gives her the bracelet and leaves, but adds he’s going to wait for her. A miserable Michelle steps into reception and is surprised to find balloons, champagne and the team as they all toast her! Later Michelle visits Heston. She confesses she’s not sure if she’s ready, what if she’s not up to the job – Heston scoffs; life is too short for ‘what if’s’. She kisses him goodbye and walks away.
