A Call of Nature
Monday 23rd August 2010
Eccentric recluse Billie (72) is walking gingerly through the woodland with her dog Nipper when she comes across Tyler (19) who taunts her by telling her he’s been killing badgers. Disgusted she heads for home. Tyler meanwhile falls into a ditch and injures his shoulder. Nipper runs off and Billie follows him to where he has found Tyler in the ditch. Tyler initially refuses Billie’s help but eventually accepts. Despite having breathing difficulties Billie manages to get Tyler back to her house. He refuses to go in and she says she wouldn’t want him to. She brings him a cup of tea and says he should go to hospital. He refuses; she persists, and he allows her to call him her doctor.
While waiting for Daniel, Billie questions Tyler on the way he treats animals, and his response agitates her chest problems further. When Daniel arrives he finds the two of them in a right state, and questions who the patient is. Daniel decides he’ll take Tyler to hospital after he has examined Billie inside the house. Daniel finds that Billie has pneumonia from keeping vigil in the woodland to try and protect the animals from the local lads who attack them for fun. Tyler steals Daniel’s phone but his getaway is ruined when he steps on a man trap. Badly injured, Billie helps Daniel attend to his injuries.
Billie confesses to setting the trap in revenge for witnessing people mutilating badgers a few nights ago; she wanted them to feel the pain the animals felt. Tyler tells her he wasn’t one of them, and she apologises. Billie and Daniel try to keep Tyler talking so he won’t lose consciousness while Nipper keeps him warm; and as he begins to fear for his life he regrets what he has done to animals. A bond seems to have developed between Billie and Tyler, however Billie suddenly becomes very quiet and passes out; Daniel discovers she has no pulse. The ambulance arrives as Daniel struggles to revive her; suddenly Billie takes a breath again. Billie is reluctant to go to hospital and leave Nipper but Daniel shows her how gently Tyler has been looking after Nipper and how the dog trusts him, so she agrees to go.
The Mill is expecting a visit from Mr.Galliflakis (48) the new chief executive of the PCT. Julia is ill at home so she asks Ruth to get one of the partners to meet him instead, but with Heston ill also that only leaves Daniel. Ruth thinks her problems are solved when Heston comes in even though he doesn’t look his best; however Zara bans him from seeing anyone including Mr.Galliflakis. Ruth brings Daniel up to speed with the situation, stressing the importance of the meeting. Julia rings Ruth to find out how things are, and urges Ruth to try to get Heston to go to the meeting as Daniel is useless. Ruth is on the cusp of convincing Heston when Cherry intervenes and frog marches him back to his office leaving a desperate Ruth still begging Heston as Julia doesn’t want Daniel to do it.
Unaware that Daniel has heard all of this, he confronts her reminding her of his authority. Mr Gallisflakis arrives, but Daniel has had to leave to deal with an emergency, Heston is asleep and Zara is unavailable, so Ruth takes the meeting. Julia rings again to find Cherry answering the phone and wants to know where Ruth is, but Cherry makes excuses and reassures her the meeting is underway. At the end of the meeting, Ruth has clearly impressed Mr.Galliflakis, who informs her he’ll tell Julia how good she was. We are left with a very triumphant Ruth.
Standing Up
Tuesday 24th August 2010
To her brother’s amusement Immie has proudly bought Gaz a book of Pop Art and is determined to take him out for the afternoon. Gaz is reluctant to venture out of Housman but Immie persuades him to go to an open mic comedy afternoon at the student union. As they are disagreeing over what constitutes art Gaz’s mate and fellow Housman patient Kevin Dunham (21) arrives; he thinks the trip out would do Gaz the world of good. Immie and Gaz arrive at the venue and are annoyed when compere Dave Bragg (24) asks them to sit at the back citing health and safety.
When Dave is ridiculously unfunny Immie and Gaz leave early, but on their way out overhear Dave telling a bouncer that he couldn’t be funny looking at Gaz’s scarred face. When Immie confronts Dave, Gaz is embarrassed but Immie is now on a mission and has a plan. They return for the seconds half of the show and the open mic spot, and Immie volunteers first. She asks the audience to all put on a ‘Gaz’ mask that she has photocopied to show solidarity with Gaz!
He’s embarrassed but Kevin joins Immie on stage and admits he set everything up with Dave as a practical joke. Immie is appalled but Kevin did it so Gaz could see that some people are going to be cruel in the big, wide world. Later at Houseman, Gaz says it was funny in a weird way, and when he adds he wants to go back to Afghanistan, Immie is astonished and doesn’t understand why. He says maybe that highlights the different ways they see the world, and he ends things with devastated Immie.
Julia rings in sick but is concerned about Mr Galliflakis. Later Ruth goes to see Julia and confesses that she dealt with Mr Galliflakis, and told him she was Julia’s deputy. Julia says Ruth saved the day and it’s clearly time for her career to start moving on. Back at The Mill Ruth reminds Heston to write the job advert for the new doctor for the BMJ. Daniel has tickets for an exclusive restaurant opening and invites Zara; however later her cousin Harriet calls and Zara feels obliged to spend the evening with her so Daniel asks Jimmi instead.
Simon later takes Cherry for a picnic and subtlety warns her that maybe she should just get over her Jimmi obsession but she’s not listening. Back at The Mill Zara arranges some extra tickets for the restaurant so she, Daniel, Harriet and Jimmi can double date. Meanwhile Cherry plucks up courage to ask Jimmi for a drink but he explains he has a date and senses Cherry’s disappointment. At the end of the day a gutted Cherry sees gorgeous Harriet greeting Jimmi in the car park and is convinced that’s that.
Rock-a-bye Baby
Wednesday 25th August 2010
Nadia Solomon (15) pushes baby ‘Titch’ in her pram, and knocks into Simon and Cherry walking past. Later Simon bumps into her again and observes her giving the screaming baby some incorrect medicine. When he questions her she’s hostile but he hands her his card. Nadia walks away but later that day reaches the end of her tether and arrives at the Mill. Simon examines Titch while Nadia responds defensively to his questions – he diagnoses a potential case of Pneumonia and asks Karen to call an ambulance.
Nadia is alarmed and Simon asks her to wait in Reception while he calls the hospital, but when the ambulance arrives she’s gone. Nadia arrives home and finds her mother Sharon Solomon (35), haggard and still in her nightie. Nadia is concerned that Sharon hasn’t eaten and tries to talk to her about Titch being unwell, but Sharon insists the baby is fine. Meanwhile Simon has discovered that the number Nadia left was for the local Bingo Hall. Karen says the address might be wrong too but Simon has to try. At the flat Nadia’s concern grows for Titch who we discover is her sister, until she finally asks her Mum if it could be Pneumonia?
Sharon is suspicious and Nadia has to admit that she went to the Surgery. Sharon tells her to call them to tell them the baby is fine, but the baby is still crying and getting worse and so Nadia goes to phone Simon. Sharon grabs the phone and then blocks Nadia’s exit. Sharon pleads - if the Doctors come they’ll take both Nadia and the baby away. Sharon goes mad when Simon arrives, and Nadia slams the door in his face. Simon phones for an ambulance. Inside Nadia protectively holds Titch as Simon pleads through the letterbox for her to open the door, and Sharon pleads with her not to. Finally Nadia opens the door and hands Titch to the Paramedics, and Sharon screams in fury as Simon reassures Nadia that her Mum will get help. Back at the Mill Simon tells Cherry he’s not sure if he did the right thing – she reassures him.
Cherry is feeling glum and tells Simon that she’s decided she needs to get over Jimmi – although we can see she still has to convince herself. At the Mill, Cherry hides under the desk when glamorous Una Philips (56) arrives and asks to speak to her – Karen lies and says she’s not in yet and Una leaves. Cherry explains that Una is the awful mother of a lovely ex boyfriend called Billy. Una then returns, and a baffled Cherry is hugged enthusiastically by her and invited to lunch. Cherry tries to enlist Karen’s help in getting out of it but Karen is too amused. Cherry tells Simon about how Una hated her so she must want something, but when Simon hears that Billy looked like Jude Law, he convinces Cherry to meet Una to keep her romantic options open.
Una lavishes wine on a suspicious Cherry and tells her how none of his girlfriends since her compare, so when she goes to the toilet Cherry sneakily uses Una’s phone to call Billy. When Una returns Cherry confronts her – Billy has a girlfriend of two years whom Una dislikes and is trying to replace! Una explains that Lauren has a new job in Cardiff and is going to take Billy away and leave her all alone! Cherry tells Una she hasn’t changed, and is still a mean and inconsiderate old woman – she should be pleased that he has found happiness. Simon later says at least she knows that Billy’s not the one – but it’s clear to him that Jimmi is still firmly on her mind.
A Serious Woman
Thursday 26th August 2010
Listless father Steve Fletcher (36) watches on as his eldest son Ben (16) looks after his two younger brothers Andy (10) and Calvin (8). As Ben bustles around doing housework Steve tells him that the doctor has said all he can do is keep taking the pills. Later, determined to help his father, Ben goes to The Mill and demands to see Steve’s doctor; he starts to hyperventilate and Cherry steps in to help. Ben says his dad has MS and isn’t coping after his mum died of cancer six months ago and Ben is looking after them all. Concerned, Cherry gets Heston to talk to Ben but it soon becomes clear to both of them that Steve has lied – he’s never been diagnosed with MS.
Meanwhile Steve has arrived at The Mill in search of Ben and Karen has to take control of Andy and Calvin. Steve talks to Cherry about how he lead Ben to believe he had MS and she tells him he needs to talk to Ben, but furious Ben doesn’t give him the chance. Steve leaves saying he has let them all down. Ben realises he’s got to find him and thinks he’ll be at Oakfield Lake; Cherry agrees to drive him. Cherry and Ben arrive to find Steve jumping into the lake.
Cherry dives in after him and Steve, panicking, accidentally knocks Cherry unconscious and she begins to sink. Jimmi (see serial) and Ben drag Steve out and Jimmi jumps in after Cherry. Caught on a chain, Jimmi eventually manages to release her and surfaces. Unconscious and not breathing Jimmi gives Cherry the kiss of life; she comes round and the first person she sees is Jimmi staring down at her.
Simon finds Cherry frantically having a clear out at 6.30 in the morning. She’s banishing all things pink and is going to discover ‘a whole new me’! As Cherry explains her ‘make-under’ Simon thinks she’s fine the way she is but she’s determined that men worth having, like Jimmi, want a serious woman not a bubbly blonde! During the morning she determines to have ‘serious’ conversations much to Zara’s amusement; and mischievously scheming Zara tells Cherry that Jimmi and Harriet got on like a house on fire. Cherry is gutted and later snaps at Jimmi. He jokingly asks if she’s jealous, and realises she is when she flounces out on the verge of tears. Jimmi tells Zara she is cold-hearted and follows Cherry to the lake determined to speak to her (see SOTD).
Julia desperately tries to pull herself and makes it into work, but Zara spots her having a moment and takes her home again; she’s too weak to protest. Zara plays nursemaid surprisingly well and Julia asks her how things are going with Daniel. Zara leaves her to sleep and sneakily turns off Julia’s mobile as she exits.
Double Bogey
Friday 27th August 2010
Charlie regales Heston with his tale of saving the life of Angela Linkson (58), wife of Letherdown Golf Club chairman Peter Linkson (50’s); he’s applied for membership of the club and Charlie reckons it’s in the bag! However he hasn’t reckoned on Alan Gull (40’s), the club secretary, who has heard of Charlie by reputation and denies his application. Meanwhile Alan is haranguing an ill-looking Peter about a land deal the club have in the offing. Back at The Campus Charlie explains to Heston that he blew the whistle on Alan and a property developer called Den Dooley at his last club and that’s why Alan has it in for him.
Later Charlie bumps into a grateful Angela who promises to put in a word for him. When Charlie returns to Letherdown he overhears Alan on the phone to Dooley scheming to remove Peter as chairman citing his recent ‘drunken’ behaviour. When Angela arrives they find Peter apparently drunk at his desk but Charlie spots that it is actually a diabetic coma and calls an ambulance; Angela says he has saved the day once again. Charlie tells Alan that he knows of his scheme to oust Peter; anxious Alan asks what his price is not to blow the whistle. Charlie insists on platinum membership, coaching for his dodgy backswing and Alan’s resignation in writing.
Cherry wakes up in hospital after a misty-eyed dream about Jimmi. Later Simon picks her up and she’s eager for news on Jimmi; he hasn’t heard from him. At home Cherry perks up when Simon hands her a bouquet of delivered flowers and is slightly disappointed that they’re from her colleagues at The Mill. Meanwhile Jimmi is stuck in court all day. He tries to ring Cherry but can’t get through. However after court has adjourned he comes to see Cherry with some rather limp looking flowers.
Cherry is snoozing but is delighted to wake up and see him. She finally plucks up the courage to ask him on a date, and he’s delighted to accept. Julia is back at work and stressed – she points the finger at Karen for a simple clerical error and disappears before Karen can defend herself. Karen investigates and has to point out that it was actually Julia’s error; Julia is confused and later apologises. Karen thinks she needs a break but once again Julia is distracted by the phone ringing. Both Zara and Heston encourage Julia to go home but she insists on working and ends up last one in the office. Alone at last she notices her hand trembling – terrified she can’t seem to stop it.
Frozen
Tuesday 31st August 2010
The tension is evident between Adam Drake (40’s) and Lisa Coen (40’s) as she scrutinises a photo of herself in her younger days. Later she sees Daniel at his Granger Clinic giving her name as Emma Drake – she wants botox citing the photograph. When Daniel probes further about her reasons for having the treatment she says she wants it for her husband. Zara surmises that her husband is having an affair but unconvinced Daniel investigates. At home Lisa and Adam’s intimacy is only distant and cold. Meanwhile Daniel discovers that Emma Drake is deceased.
Concerned he calls Adam who confirms his wife is dead. Lisa returns to The Mill but when Daniel challenges her she runs out and bemused Daniel sees her talking to herself outside. Daniel goes to see Adam where he tells him Lisa is Emma’s twin sister; after Emma’s death they started sleeping together. When Lisa arrives she admits she has been pretending to Emma as she was so perfect. Adam explains she was far from it – he discovered after her death that she was having an affair. They both realise how disturbing their relationship had become.
Elaine Cassidy deliberates whether to interrupt her yoga to answer the phone. Later she meets lover Paul Foster (40’s) at a craft fair; he’s making an effort for her. They have a lovely lunch and go back to hers on the pre-text of him fixing her boiler! Clearly happy and relaxed in each other’s company he notices she’s been looking at job adverts around the country.
The mood changes as Elaine explains she can’t go on with their 10 year affair. Paul claims he’ll leave his wife when his son has left for university; they’re both upset. Paul leaves saying he’ll call later but when he doesn’t Elaine calls The Mill and re-instates her interview for the doctor’s position the next day. Julia is back at work. Feeling overwhelmed she hides herself away as much as possible but Zara notices Julia has made a simple error with some paperwork. Later as Jimmi and Cherry grab a sneaky moment alone to arrange their date they discover Julia asleep on his examination table. Julia claims to be fine but notices her hands are shaking once again.
