(Episode 5006)

A casual remark from Miles sees Nicole start to worry that her relationship with Aden may be moving at too fast a pace for Aden. She immediately becomes awkward around him and her cautious questioning of him gives Aden exactly the wrong idea, and he starts to worry that the relationship is moving too fast for her. Their situation is made worse because Liam and Aden are flatmates. Liam, inadvertently, keeps interrupting Nicole and Aden’s attempts at talking things through.

Liam becomes increasingly uncomfortable about being around the couple. Aden and Nicole both notice and try to set Liam’s concerns at ease, but without much success. It’s Martha who Liam eventually talks about his problems to, and they both seem to enjoy their meetings immensely. Aden and Nicole finally realise that they have been chatting at cross purposes and are excited to learn that neither of them want to slow the relationship down. Back in a good place, and finally more relaxed, Nicole blurts out that she loves him. And Aden is left reeling.

Alf, still shaken by the race riots, is becoming increasingly more introspective and difficult to live with. Miles makes things worse by stirring him – trying to get him to focus on someone, or something else, other than himself. Everyone notices how grumpy and inconsiderate Alf has become and Alf takes their concern as criticism and it only makes him worse. When Alf doesn’t call to let Miles know that he won’t be home for dinner, Miles has had enough. He tells Alf in no uncertain terms that if he isn’t going to start seeing the good things around him, instead of constantly “bashing Summer Bay,” then he really should think about moving somewhere else. Alf is stunned by the suggestion.

Charlie can’t help feeling bad that Angelo’s been promoted over her, and tells him as much. The ensuing uneasiness that causes starts to impact on their relationship too. It certainly spills over into the workplace when Charlie is far too aggressive in her handling of a graffiti vandal. Charlie tries to feel happy for Angelo, but can’t even agree to share the office with him and moves her things out. It’s only when Angelo tells her that while he’s excited about his promotion, for what it means to his career, he wishes it hadn’t happened because of the harm it’s done to their relationship. He wishes they could get back to the happy place they were at when they were on holiday together. Charlie’s moved by that, and the couple make love and make up. Later however, when they’re about to head out for dinner, Angelo suggests that they should move in together. While making all the right noises, it’s obvious that Charlie’s shaken by the suggestion.

(Episode 5007)

The Australia Day race riot profoundly shocked Alf, and dented his belief in the people and spirit of Summer Bay. Since then he’s lost interest in his businesses and has been constantly grumpy and depressed. Everyone is concerned for him, but no one seems to be able to get through to him and get him back on track. Martha’s especially worried as she’s never seen her Grandad like this before.

Tony asks Alf out fishing, but Alf even turns that down. It’s Irene who finally starts to break down the wall Alf has surrounded himself with. She agrees that a lot of bad things have happened around them lately, but she tries to get him to see that there is still a lot of good things happening too – she tells him that he needs to have hope and points out how well Aden and Martha have coped with their personal tragedies. Alf starts to look around. He talks to Aden and Nicole and sees what Irene was talking about. When he catches up with Tony and tells him he’s changed his mind and does want to go fishing with him – it seems like the old Alf is back.

Nicole shocked Aden when she told him she loved him and he’s had trouble working out what it means for their relationship. Normally reticent about talking about his feelings, Aden seeks advice from Tony and even Liam, while Nicole opens up to Alf. Nicole, feeling terrible that she let slip that she loved him, and worried that she’s scared him off, tries to talk to Aden, but nothing seems to come out right. It’s after a chat to Alf that Aden asks Nicole to pay him a visit. He tells her that while he can’t tell her that he loves her yet, her telling him she loved him was very important to him. Aden assures her that he won’t be running away – far from it Liam still doesn’t have many friends around the Bay and is pleased when Martha’s friendly to him. He confides in her how hard it is living in the same house as Aden when Aden’s going out with his ex - Nicole. He sees them together a lot and it makes all of them uncomfortable. He feels really weird when Aden asks his advice about Nicole’s declaration of love. Martha thinks the situation is intolerable and that Liam needs to sort it out. It’s that advice that leads to Liam telling Aden and Nicole that he’s decided to move out.

(Episode 5008)

What Gina’s seen of Mink she doesn’t like and she doesn’t want Xavier hanging around with her, but she can’t put a blanket ban on them. Mink is aware what Gina thinks and gets an inkling of why she feels that way. After Mink gives Xavier a hard time he probes Romeo for reasons why she’s as aggressive as she is, and Romeo reveals that Mink’s only recently out of juvenile detention, but he won’t say what she was in for. When Mink sees Gina in the Surf Club, she confronts her, demanding to know if Gina has a problem with her, but Gina doesn’t buy into the discussion. Later, Mink pays Gina a surprise visit at home. She tells Gina she thinks the reason Gina doesn’t like her is because she sees herself in her. She believes Gina was the “bad girl” 30 years ago and that’s why she reacts to Mink the way she does. Gina’s very confronted by Mink’s visit, but reveals little. Xavier’s furious with Mink when he finds out she’s paid his Mum a visit. They argue, but Mink’s unrepentant – then she shocks Xavier to his core by revealing that she killed her abusive and violent step-father and that’s why she was locked up.

Charlie and Angelo have agreed to move in together, but Charlie is showing a lot less enthusiasm than her partner. Angelo is keen to move into Leah’s place, but despite Leah being happy with that plan, Charlie lies to Angelo and says that Leah isn’t keen on the idea. Angelo buys the paper so they can check the rental properties out, but Charlie finds an objection to every flat that Angelo finds. Later, when Angelo tries to gauge just how excited Charlie is about moving in with him, she staggers him by saying that maybe it’s too big a step for them to be taking right now.

Leah, Geoff and Ruby are all still struggling to get back to normal after the race riot. Leah’s solution is to remain house-bound, while Ruby, feeling very guilty that she instigated the whole thing, wants to talk about it. Geoff would prefer to forget it and put it behind him. Those around Leah begin to see that she has a problem and Miles and Alf offer her their help and try to get her out of the house, but Leah pushes them away. Even a visit from Geoff and Ruby comes to nothing and doesn’t improve Geoff’s depression either – his anger having been inflamed by seeing one of the rioters in the Surf Club. Geoff is finding Ruby’s constant worrying about causing the riot irritating and he eventually explodes and tells her that yes, she does has to wear some of the blame for the protest becoming violent, and Ruby’s left crushed. Leah takes another call from Hazem’s mother and it’s clear that she hasn’t been visiting him at all and she really has no intention of doing so. A visit from Irene convinces her that Leah has a real problem -it seems she’s too scared to even leave the house.

(Episode 5009)

Geoff apologises to Ruby for saying she was partly to blame for the race riots, but Ruby doesn’t think he means it. She can’t believe how angry Geoff is, and it’s confusing for Geoff too. Ruby seeks advice from Xavier, about what to do about Geoff, but he can’t shed any light on his behaviour – it just doesn’t sound like Geoff. Ruby tries to talk to Geoff. She’s keen to get their relationship back on track. But while they’re at the Surf Club, Geoff sees one of the lifeguards who was involved in the riot. Geoff tries to attack him, but is held back by John Palmer who is drawn in by the noise. Ruby is shocked by what she’s witnessed. The police are called and Avary gives Geoff a talking to and a warning. Ruby’s pleased that Geoff hasn’t been charged, but her joy is short-lived as Geoff tells her he needs some space, and then promptly breaks up with her. Ruby is devastated by it all. Geoff seeks Alf out for some answers, and Alf suggests that he does what Geoff always used to do when life threw him a curve ball. Geoff takes in his advice, and turns up at a local Church, but he can’t help feeling like a fake as he settles into a pew.

Mink has just told Xavier that she killed Romeo’s step-father. Xavier hopes she’s just winding him up, but she isn’t. When Mink takes off, Romeo’s left to tell the story. His step-father was a violent drunk and a coward and he used to beat his mum, and one night it looked like he might kill her, so Mink whacked him with a cricket bat. It’s a difficult story for Xavier to digest, but it gets even harder when Mink later tells him it’s not the truth and that she actually killed her father to save Romeo, not their mum. Romeo is annoyed that Mink has told Xavier what really happened, but Xavier, as a good mate, wants to share Romeo’s ups and downs, and Romeo fills him in on exactly what happened on the fateful night. It’s been an emotional day for Xavier and it’s not quite over. As he settles down to some peace and quiet, Ruby turns up, totally distraught after her breakup with Geoff, and Xavier is left to comfort her.

After repeated efforts to coax Leah out of her house, Rachel demands that Leah tell her what’s wrong. Leah finally admits that since the riots she’s terrified of everything. Leah admits to Rachel that she feels guilty about what happened to Hazem and that she can’t even bring herself to talk to him on the phone let alone visit him. A kindly visit by Colleen, delivering her customary casserole, is enough to bring Leah to tears. Colleen is shocked at the state Leah’s in as she’s left to comfort her.

Friday 19th February 2010
(Episode 5010)

Geoff is feeling totally lost. He’s broken up with Ruby, and, at Alf’s suggestion, he’s gone to church. He chats with the local Reverend, Elijah, and admits he’s lost his purpose in life and he doesn’t like the person he’s become. Elijah’s gentle advice helps Geoff, who does a lot of thinking after his visit. Making a decision, Geoff goes to Irene and tells her his plans. He’s decided to go overseas for a couple of years and become a missionary. And then he wants to come home and go to Bible College and become a Reverend. Ruby overhears him telling Irene and both are shocked by the news. Geoff and Ruby chat. He tells her this is something he has to do, and despite the fact that he loves her, he can’t be with her. Ruby tries to be supportive, but it’s really difficult for her especially when Geoff tells her that he’s leaving today. It’s a low key departure for Geoff with only Irene and Ruby there to wave good-bye as his bus rolls away.

Martha and Liam has been chatting lately and finding that they enjoy each other’s company. Liam confides in her that he’s having real trouble finding a place to live. Sick of house hunting, he offers to help Martha out on the farm when she tells him how busy she is. She laughs at the offer believing he’s joking, but Liam’s serious - despite never having done a day’s manual work in his life. Martha doesn’t think he’ll last a day, but takes him up on his offer anyway. Liam works hard on some fencing, but he’s pretty hopeless at it. Over lunch Martha opens up to him about how she’s handling all the recent tragedies in her life and the two seem very comfortable and relaxed together. At the end of a hard day’s work Martha suggests Liam moves in with her. She has plenty of room. Liam’s unsure if it’s the right thing to do, but Martha convinces him. Liam agrees, but is totally shocked when Martha kisses him passionately and then starts to undress him.

Colleen tells Miles that Leah is too scared to leave her home, traumatised after the race riots. Miles visits Leah and quickly realises that Colleen wasn’t exaggerating. Leah admits she’s scared and fearful of going outside. Miles does some research and goes through a checklist of symptoms before confirming that she has agoraphobia. While Leah doesn’t want to see a psychiatrist or go on medication, she’s dubious when Miles suggests she tries relaxation techniques instead. Despite her scepticism Leah lets Miles take her through a series of breathing techniques. When she’s mastered them Miles encourages her to put them into practice and Leah finally manages to take a step outside.
