How does Holly feel when Dan throws her out of the flat?

“Holly’s completely desperate. As a full blown drug addict, her first thought is, “Where will I get drugs?” The fact that she’ll have nowhere to live is secondary. Dan throws her out because her parents keep coming round. She's become far more trouble than she’s worth as far as he’s concerned.”

How does she end up back in the village?

“She can’t think where else to go. She’s off her face. She’s nicked some of Dan’s supplies and ends up taking too much. Ashley and Doug find her in the graveyard and take her to Mulberry Cottage. John and Moira can't believe the state she's in. She goes home with them as there's nowhere else for her to go. She's in a bad way as she's craving for drugs and that’s when the doctor is called.”

Does Holly admit she has a problem?

“Deep down she knows she does but she’s still in denial about it. All she can think of is getting more drugs and she even tries to get the doctor to give her tranquilisers, sleeping pills, anything.”

What makes Holly finally break down and admit she’s a drug addict?

“It’s Moira’s reaction, really. John’s always been tough on her but not Moira - until now. Moira tells her to get out if she’s going to keep on using. This is when Holly realises how bad it is and she admits she has a big problem and asks Moira to help her. Holly’s very scared.”

Is this why Holly agrees to go to counselling?

“Yes but she’s just playing the game. Once she’s there she immediately starts to resent it. She’s also craving a fix so she does a runner and manages to score.”

How do John and Moira react when they find her back home doing drugs?

“It comes as even more of a shock to them because they’re both thinking Holly’s on the mend to a certain extent - especially when she makes out she ran away because she was scared. But Holly's completely out of it and John and Moira have to lift her off the floor onto her bed. What makes it even worse is that her little sister Hannah sees it all.”

What do you feel has turned Holly into a drug addict?

“I’ve discovered through doing research for this storyline that people from all walks of life become addicted. I don’t think you can blame John and Moira in any way. No one can stop people from doing drugs once they’re addicts.”

What is it going to take to make Holly want to beat her addiction?

“I think the family will ultimately make her realise she has to stop. Her addiction is tearing her family, who were so strong and happy when they arrived in Emmerdale, to pieces. Her parents’ relationship is suffering, Hannah feels she has to go to people outside the family with her problems and Adam’s having to work all the hours God sends on the farm because John’s preoccupied with Holly.”
