Matthew Werkmeister (Neighbours' Zeke Kinski) Interview

Matthew Werkmeister plays Zeke Kinski, Susan Kennedy’s stepson and Rachel’s brother.

“Zeke is about to make the transition from little boy to grown-up teenager, which will be good for me because I can broaden his character traits,” says Matthew.
“He becomes more socially aware and gets a new girlfriend.”

Zeke is also involved in a nail-biting cliffhanger after an end of term party in a warehouse goes terribly wrong.

“I can’t reveal exactly what happens, of course,” says Matthew. “But it will be very tense and confirm some of Zeke’s tragic suspicions about his family.”

Zeke was adopted by his stepmother Susan after his father Alex died of cancer on their wedding night. Two years prior to this, he lost his mum, too.

“Poor Zeke feels that he’s not as important or loved as much as his stepsister Libby,’ says Matthew. ‘But he comes to term with the sad knowledge that no-one will ever really look after him the same way his parents did.”

At the tender age of 16, Matthew is grateful for the help and support he received from other cast members.

“Jackie, who plays my step mum, is like a mother to me,” he says. “Alan Fletcher is great, too. He’s always helping me work out how to deliver my lines.”

Matthew was 14 when he was offered a coveted part in Neighbours.
“I was on holiday with my parents when a call inviting me for an audition came through,” he recalls. “Dad took the call on his mobile on the golf course, but turned the audition down because we were a five hours’ drive away.

“Mum and I were horrified when we found out. We called my agent back and asked if we could still go to the audition. My agent told us to keep driving anyway. On the journey, a script was faxed over to us at a McDonalds.

‘I got a call-back audition after this, so we had to drive to Melbourne from our holiday home again. This time I did a scene with Caitlin Stasey. We returned to the holiday home yet again and heard nothing for four days. My heart sank because I thought I hadn’t got the part. But then came the call I’d been waiting for. I was absolutely ecstatic.”

Matthew was five years old when he demonstrated his tap-dancing skills during a school excursion. His teacher recommended dancing lessons, which he took for five years. At the age of 10 he joined a performing company and toured abroad in locations such as Paris Disney.

Matthew also performed in a stage production of The Fully Monty - as a character who keeps his clothes on!

Neighbours makes its debut on Five on Monday 11th February 2008 in its traditional slots of 1.45pm and 5.30pm every weekday.
