Fur TV
With a furry belch, MTV confirm their dedication to the kind of uncivilised television your parents would disapprove of.
A late night puppet show, Fur TV’s opening disclaimer should clear up any confusion over intended audience: anyone offended by scenes of a sexual nature between puppets and humans need to switch off immediately, as the debauchery begins apace almost as soon as the title rolls.
Perhaps a shade too far for the BBC - who first aired Fur TV in 2004 after it won their Greenlight Award - MTV seems the natural home for three loud, horny puppets up for whatever they can get (and they get a surprising amount given their flappy mouths, detachable eyeballs, and extra limbs hanging in the wardrobe).
Brazilian cad Lapeño, heavy metal connoisseur Fat Ed and sick appreciator of wildlife documentaries Mervin are the main men, rambling around their flat and living easily in our human world with ne’er an eyelash batted at their puppet nature. The storylines won’t win any BAFTAs, but provide plenty Oh My God and I Can’t Believe They Did That (With a Puppet) moments.
The occasionally unpleasant attention to detail turns what could be on the wrong side of stupid into something on the right side of funny: a puppet arm on a lady’s behind, for example, is done so well you feel like a guilty fetishist.
Good use of YouTube and an inspired online 'sex tape' campaign with Big Brother 8's Chanelle will probably create an early audience, but it may not manage a loyal following as it doesn’t yet have the must-see edge of a cult classic. However, if you’re still hungover, a bit tiddled from Sunday drinking or at any stage of alcohol abuse, it’s an amusing and crude watch with scenes of an explicit puppet nature that's certainly worth a watch.
Launching on MTV One, 10pm, Sunday 4th May 2008.
