Return To Treasure Island: The Complete Series

Brian Blessed (he of the big booming voice) plays Long John Silver in this continuation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic pirate adventure Treasure Island.

Set ten years on from the original story, we meet the older but not any wiser rogue and his former cabin boy Jim Hawkins (Christopher Guard), finding ourselves immersed in a whole new globe-trotting adventure that will undoubtedly lead back to the infamous Treasure Island. The pair, along with trusty man-servant Ben Gunn and some like-mined souls, slowly make their way to Mexico via Jamaica. This mini-series from 1986 is a wonderfully glossy and atmospheric affair that has kept its pace and excitement nicely. The cast (the leads especially) work well on screen together, as they find themselves in all manner of scrapes, from death sentences and imprisonment to mutinies and treachery.

This is a treat to watch and a curiosity too, the story does the original great justice. Considering the production values of this series and its still appealing nature, the only real question to ask is why it’s taken so long to get a DVD release.
