Peep Show: Series 5
British TV comedy has been in the doldrums since the glory days of Partridge, Pegg and Brass Eye in the 90s. With very little of note apart from the over-rated Mighty Boosh and Green Wing, Peep Show's continued brilliance marks it out as one of, if not the best, British shows so far this century.
Series Five deals with the aftermath of the tragicomic events of the fourth series, which involved our anti-hero Mark basically marrying fiancee Sophie so as to not cause a fuss. Sophie's now a gibbering wreck as divorce looms, Mark's slightly more socially inept than normal as he's thrown back into dating and Jeremy's, well, Jeremy, which means hilariously awkward scenes involving stationary/stationery fornication, Christian rock and light-hearted sex crimes.
Writers Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong are still on board, which perhaps explains the show's success where other series' quality dips as time goes by, though that's not to say there isn't the slightest dip in the relentlessly high standard the show's set itself. More extreme by the episode (often Superhans the gloriously deadpan culprit), Mark and Jeremy's ridiculous predicaments don't quite work as well as the daily ritual humiliations of the first or second series. Still, this is the most minor of quibbles when the show as a whole is as rib-crackingly funny as it is. One of the true comedy greats, Peep Show is that rarest of things: hilarious, touching and original comedy that fully justifies the hype.
Extras: Behind the scenes glimpses, highlight reel from all five series, and Sophie's perspective.
