Doctor At Sea: The Complete Series
The popular Doctor sitcom franchise continued with this 1974 series, taking two of the most popular characters, Dick Stuart-Clark (Geoffrey Davies) and Duncan Waring (Robin Nedwell), from the familiar (yet stale by now) surroundings of St. Swithin’s Hospital and out to sea.
This was a welcome idea as it opened up some fresher storylines, new opportunities for set pieces and introduced some new characters too. The looming figure of professor Geoffrey Luftus re-appears and in a nice move we find his twin brother Norman (both of course played by the excellent Ernest Clark) just happens to be the captain of the ship that the pair of childish Doctors work on.
This series still raises a chuckle or two today, the comedy is well written and acting nicely played, and there are some great guest stars too (watch out for David Jason, Sandra Dickinson, Bob Todd and Christopher Biggins amongst others). The leads work so well together it’s easy to see why their characters went on to reappear in future continuations of the series.
Extras: None.
