Paulo Nutini: 'Pencil Full Of Lead'

Paulo Nutini is a bit odd. For one, his voice is quite literally indescribable, so I won’t even bother - I suggest you listen for yourself. Secondly, he changes genre more than he changes socks. It is exceptionally hard to keep up with such excessive changes in direction but hey, it keeps Mr Nutini interesting. Kind of.

With its bouncing drums and swooshing trumpets, ‘Pencil Full Of Lead’ sounds like a flapper girl soundtrack. Jaunty doesn’t even come close to describing the musical party that make this song. It is jazz, it’s pop, it’s a tiny bit rock’n’roll and, of course, somehow immensely Scottish sounding. Utterly confusing, this song will leave you speechless. Unfortunately, not in a good way.
